Civ colours ?

It is bazaar.

This one made me chuckle. A bazaar is where you buy things, you mean bizarre.

Correcting people makes you sound so condescending doesnt it?

All of this is all well and good, but if you are color blind, the last thing you need is varying shades of the same color all over your map. When I am running around and the edge of a culture border pops up on the edge of the known world, I never know if it is the Chinese or Americans until I see the capitol. Egypt/Greece are the same way as are the Russians and Aztecs, and the Iroquois and Indians. Thank goodness for the English, Zulu, Germans and French. At least I know who's around then.

I say establish 16-24 DISTINCT colors and prioritize them like this:

1) Red
2) Blue
3) Yellow
4) Green
5) Orange
6) Purple
7) Pink
8) Brown
9) Gray
10) Black
11) White
12) Light Blue
etc...

The Human gets to chose what color they want and the AI then goes down the list and assigns each civ the next color down the list. That would increase the "unknown" factor so that when you discover a new civ all decked out in their lovely blue garments, you won't know who it is until you actually speak with them instead of automatically saying "Oh, that's just the Mongols. I don't feel like dealing with Ghengis Kahn at the moment."

actually china prob. shud be red - it's held in the highest regard and is heavily infused in chinese culture - from rooftops, lanterns, flags, restaurants, ink, etc. - hence the adoption later on by mao and the communist party as well, as it already was considered a very good, lucky, etc. color by the population - e.g. red guards, red book, red flag, etc.

japan has a lot of red, from the influence of china, but other earthy colors or colors from nature wud work well.

I think the colours should be chosen from this (mathematically determined by me :D) list, in order of selection:

Black
White
Red
Blue
Green
Yellow
Magenta
Cyan
"Sea Bluegreen" (dunno what to call this colour, it's 33% green, 67% blue)
Purple
Heavy Pink
Orange
Light Green
Yellow Green
Pale Yellow
Lavender
Light Blue
Indigo
Peach
Neon Green
Vomit Brown

EDIT: These are the most different colours in the spectrum.

wouldn't it be easier to have random colors or to choose your own if you care so much?

The good thing about pre-determined colors by civ is that it saves "information-processing time" in trying to figure out whether units you spot are friend or foe. The good thing with colors by "play order" is that it saves time to figure out in what order the units are going to be moved. Then again, Civ's TBS, so time is not really a factor. Although it could be modded beforehand (probably on the .xml-level (by the looks of it)), a system for assigning colors to civs (and remembering the choices) in-game would be rather nice. Probably not worth the time to program, though.

Since many civs seem to end up with two different leaders with different traits, it might actually sort of be good if the two leaders had different colors as well -- if colors are civ-specific and not player number-specific.

Anyway, I'll mod all colors! They'll get a fine color.
Like Holistic said, it took me days to reassociate some colors with their new owners when I bought C3C (I didn't have PTW, even more new civ!), even if I got them in my game.

Most likely they will be able to do just that, the same as they were able to do in previous versions of Civ.

Because that would be far too easy. ;)

Seriously though, there should be some default color for each civ. There's something fun in speculating whether that green border on the edge of the fog is Persian, Greek, or Japanese. Plus, a doubt some players want to be slowed down in choosing colors and the more continuity between the games on this, the better.

But I do think you're onto something. Players should have the option of customizing the civ colors if they want to (Personally, I'm partial to green and would have that for any civ I play).

Part of the problem, I'm sure, lies is how often different civs use the same colors. The US, UK, and France all have the red, white, and blue on their current flags. I can't think of a civ that uses/used pink or brown or teal or a number of others that civ includes in the game.

I think it's better to have an option to customize colours for the civ. Just like any RTS game out there.

Ah so. Well as long as we can choose the colours we want default colours are fine. Civ3 didn't allow that option and its kind of irksome, especially when you get colours you distinctly don't want.

Yeah, for example the color of Russia in Civ3... I like playing Russia because their UU (in conquest) and traits. But the color reminds me of something else, if you know what I mean.. :mischief:

Greece could either be dark blue or light blue. Dark blue was a ussual hoplite colour (red was dominant in spartan uniforms, but it wouldnt have anything to do with modern Greece)

Mark, I was going to suggest this same thing. It has benefits, even for those not color blind. I hate when you get to certain parts of the game and everyone has similar colored civs. You should be able to reassociate the colors based on available colors. Colors would be assigned when you meet them (automatically) and then if the player wishes he reassign them at any time, assume that there are unused colors available.

Then those who don't want to have the French wearing the gay looking pink and switch and those who think it is appropriate can leave it on them.

I think we need to stop worrying about colors. As long as they are easy to recognise(sp), and constant. Most civs realisticaly would be some kind of blue or red, afterall who ever saw paintings of pink barbarians charging into battle :crazyeye: .

I agree.. the agrument will never end otherwise!
Every civ should have an alternate colour that it can switch to if you select their primary colour.. problem solved! :)

Why should every civ have just one backup? A player should be able to pick any color for themselves AND their opponents. There is no reason to limit the player to certain colors.
