I bought CIV Complete online as a download. It has installed fine, but everytime I try to run BtS it crashes ("program has stopped working") back to desktop. Warlords works fine apparently.

The first time it crashed when I was about to start a new game (choosing civ), the second it crashed just when I opened it.

Please help me.

Download from where? Different online hosts have differences in the download package.
Also, which operating system are you using?

From Gamers Gate. (not a very good site it seems, not the first time they've given me trouble) It's on Windows 7.

I don't even know what that means. I'm usually a Mac user. :/

There is a thread in the Mac forum for running CIV on a virtual Windows computer inside the Mac. If that is what you are doing, you might have a look there.

Don't just double click on the .exe file, right click on it and choose run as administrator. If you get a choice in the installer, installing it somewhere other than the default program files will help too.

I tried doing that but it doesn't help.

The weird thing is that sometimes the crash is immediate when I start the game, at other times I get so far as to load a new game, but it always crashes before I can play. :/

Try downloading it again, the file might be corrupted.

Then install it in C:\Games\Sid Meier's Civ IV Complete or something similar.
In Windows 7 the default directory C:\Program Files (x86) is protected, if you run a program without administrative rights the program itself cannot write in its own directory. And unfortunately Civilization puts error log files in the program folder, not in the user's.
That may be the reason for the crash.

I already redownloaded it many times. But I'll try installing it in a Games folder tonight. :)

I tried doing exactly what you said, but the same thing happened:

I can play Warlords just fine.
When I try BtS I can get through the startup menus, but when the actual game loads it crashes. --> standard windows message "program has stopped working".

Now it works, after the second reinstalling today. Played for two hours without crah so far. :D
