So, lately I've been playing Civ I - Emperor - One City Challenge (and become quickly addicted).

My personal record is Romans - reached Alpha Centaury in 1555.

Is this any good? Is there any board where to post results / discuss strategies (for Civ I, of course)?

I never ever tried this challenge so I wouldn't really know, but in my mind
succeeding with this on the Emperor level sounds impressive...

What Wonders do you build?

It's not really *that* impressive once you know the wonders to build: I think it's a must to build:

a - the colossus
b - shakespeare's theatre

as soon as possible. The first give you much needed "trade arrows" (science and luxuries, whoo!), the second one, well, you don't need luxuries anymore.

I find OCC quite fun and relaxing, try it!

Very good, now try to win it *without* building colossus or shake's theatre !!!

Thanks, I might try this :)
Do you recommend winning by SPACERACE or EXTERMINATION of the opposition?

Hihi, that's the spirit of a Civ1 player! I've never tried to nuke my way to victory, but I'll try (and probably drown half the world in the meantime :P)

You can try a completely different approach of course,
for example the Scrooge McDuck;

get Writing (and if necessary Navigation), then forget all about science research,
instead grab hold of every single gold that you can obtain right and left,
then build an army of diplomats that travel the globe
stealing techs, bribing enemy troops and in general
cripple the opposition (if possible, let Barbarians take his cities).

At the right moment you can switch over to a Tech Race
where you hopefully have good chances to be the
first man in Space.

(My previous post was perhaps a bit unclear, it was
a suggestion on a possible winning strategy in the
One City Challenge.

Some opponent cities may revolt and join
your side though, especially when you grow
very rich.
How do you handle these cases if you're supposed
to play One City Challenge?)

Never happened to me (but then again, I always aimed for the plain Alpha Centauri win).
I guess you'd have to call it a day and dump the game (or call it two cities challenge :P)

Yep, this revolt thing happens sometimes, usually when you're rich
and the opposition is very poor.

You just see a message that goes something like this:
"the people of Calcutta admire the prosperity of the Americans/city of Las Vegas"
and
suddenly you get a city for free with most of the structures
and military units intact. Sometimes it's a city
you didn't even know existed on a continent you didn't even know existed!

This thing cannot easily be influenced by the human player though, so
I guess you should allow it but insert some specific rules like
"when this happens in OneCityChallenge, the human player should
disband all units in the city and allow it to be retaken as soon as possible,
but he is allowed to sell the buildings of the city until this happens".

As a matter of fact this situation happened in my current game when
I (as Mahatma Gandhi) drove the Aztecs out of their fertile positions in North America and
helped them reestablish in South America. By now they were dirt poor
with no capital and one of their six cities was so jealous of my wealth
that he decided to switch sides.

one city challenge!!! great!

It's seems that date is very nice)
How many special did you have in your BFC? When did you finish the Colosuss?
Last time I try to play without Colosuss (because its like gambling, sometimes AI gets it around 3300 BC) and with average BFC (not like two gold and two horses).
What opening did you use? And how many settlers did you have at the start?

I ask all these questions since I was very interested to find a strategy that allowed me to win nice percent of the Emperor OCC games. However my percent of wins is still low.

I NEVER managed to win a OCC on Emperor Level. How do you stop the cheating AI that comes waging war with Mech.Inf. on 300AD? The time I got closer was by using Diplomats, but no matter how much I tried, too many troops kept gathering around my city, depriving me of resources, and stoping my production.
My guess (I've never tried) is that by playing the Russians you have a greater chance of success, since the likelihood of being placed in a remote island with no warmonger neighbours is greater. That'll be be my next try.
And my congratulations to all of you who have succeeded!

Mech Inf in 300 AD? O_o...I've never seen this before. Probably in the other versions of civ there are such situations...My version isn't the newest. However may be...sometimes AI have in my games Mech Inf in 300 AD too. And yes, I ususally play as Russians) Also United Nations can help sometimes...
