sorry if this post is in the wrong forum but I wasnt sure wether or not to place it in the conquests forum or not. now I have played civ II avidly and just recently purchased civ III complete which as far as I know contains the game and both expansions. One question that I cant seem to find an answer to however is wether or not your suppossed to gain tech's from another civ if they are more advanced and you capture one of their cities. I was lagging behind in research and playing as the japanese so I decided to take some of my opponents cities in an effort to catch up, but when I took the city I didnt get a pop up asking me which tech I wanted and upon looking at my science advisors tab no new tech had been acquired. I am sorry if this is a really newb question or if it has been answered elsewhere, Its just alot of material which while I look forward to reading, will take alot of time. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

No; you cannot obtain techs that way. The ways to obtain techs are:
researching, trading, in peace treaties, stealing, 1 free tech each age if you are scientific, 1 free tech if you are the first to Philosophy, 2 free techs when you've build the Theory of Evolution - Wonder, Great Library and that's about it I think ...

hmmm I was afraid of that... with this knowledge I think im gonna start fresh o well thanks for the help.

In CIV3 you are not supposed to gain techs by capturing cities, unless:

1. You are behind in tech and capture The Great Library (works until you learn Education).
2. You gain tech as part of a peace treaty (with the civ you captured the city from).

Welcome to CFC PsychoMantis! I like that nick :)

oh.. ok, if I got the great library from them would I immediatly get all the techs that at least two other ppl have? cuz I remember in civ II that if multiple opponents had a tech and I got the library after they had it I wouldnt get the tech until either they traded it or I researched it, so it wasnt retroactive so to speak. and thanks for the compliment and welcome, I saw all the civ games togeather and decided it was time to buy, then when im lookin for info and tips I stumbled upon this place... think its safe to say I dont need to look anywhere else.

Correct :)

But remember that Education disable this effect.

No, don't give up! You're actually doing well. You can make peace with them and demand some techs as part of the deal. If you captured a city the AI will often accept to give you a couple of good techs in exchange for peace.

ahhh, so there is a reason to keep those far out there cities and such. I just read about using specialists in those cities and found that rather interesting. well mebbe ill keep at it. thanks for the help.

Keep in mind, that it's when the holder of the GL discovers Education that the GL effects go away. So if you capture it from a civ that already learned Education, but you haven't, you still get the benefits from it. Unlike Civ2 where it was the first person to learn Education and the effects were done for everyone.

Two other civs that you have contact with. If you haven't met a civ yet, the Great Library has no effect.
