I noticed that this conversation was brewing under another post so I decided to make it a key point in another post.
I for one, may be the most annoying part of multiplayer. I am the guy with a girlfriend/fiance. Which means even though I have decided to play 3 hours of civ against a human player... that may not happen. When your woman is around... distractions abound.
If I do decide to play multi player, then it is going to be with at least 2 computer CIVs on Monarchy+ level to keep those butt heads who use every advantage against another human player in check. AI in (my opinion) multiplayer keeps super power gamers in check (to an extent). It also gives you the opportunity to ally against power mongers (which the AI does seem to dislike and turn against).
