Civ III won't start up

ı have a PC that does the same thing time to time , ı close and restart the computer and it starts the game in the second try . ı try to avoid moving files from their respective folders ; ı save alot and try to move relevant files to their own folders .I did that after exiting the game and generally it locks . While exiting the game momentarily with the help of the button that has the windows sign on it , ı haven't seen it happen yet . ı am not knowledgeable about computers as it may show , all ı can do is to relate what ı have experienced .

OK, so I have a netbook that I want to install Civ III on.

Here's my problem: the game installs fine, but then it won't start up. I click on the icon, and it does nothing. No errors or any clues.

The netbook far exceeds the Civ III requirements. Any help?

Vista or XP?

Vista watches everything in Program Files with a very sharp eye. From what I've gathered, C3C will work fine if you install it someplace other than the Program Files folder.

If XP, I would first check the shortcut that the icon is using. It could be messed up.

I recently had this, or something similar, happen to me. Turns out it was my firewall (PC Tools Firewall Plus), right after a version update.

I knew where the problem was when I turned off the firewall and the game started up with no problems.

I have the exact same netbook and the exact same problem.

No idea what it could be caused by. I updated DirectX and so on but nothing.

Incidentally, how did you go about installing it? I made ISO images of my install CD's on a computer with an optical drive and then I put them on my netbook, loading them up with Daemon tools. Just a matter of curiosity, how people get around the lack of optical drive, etc.

So far, Freeciv SDL works like a charm and it's quite endearing and fun. It should fill the void, I should think.

To fix this you need to add the following lines to the conquests.ini file under: \Civilization III Complete\Conquests

KeepRes=1
Can be 0 or 1. If 1, your screen resolution is used for the game instead of the default 1024x768.

Video Mode=1280
Can be 1024, 1152, 1280, 1600, 1792. Changes the game's resolution to the value specified (instead of the default 1024x768).

Once i did this I can play the game but the bottom of the screen is gone. It's playable, sorta.
