Civ is stingy with Stone and Marble

I've noticed on most of my maps that the game is extremely stingy with giving me stone and marble. Sometimes there's only ONE stone in the whole map, whereas there'll be a ton of Gold, Silver, Iron, Copper and coal all over the place. Is there a good map setting to insure more instances of Stone and Marble?

Because I don't understand how rocks can be more scarce then precious metals. Or uranium for that matter.

Rocks may be commonplace but those that are suitable for the construction of Wonders may not be. The Egyptians had to transport their Limestone for a few hundred miles in order to build the Pyramids. There's also some speculation that the stones used at Stonehenge were brought in from the mainland.

That is true enough about the stones used for the Pyramids and Stonehenge, I just figure that it seems odd to have 10 gold resources and only 1 stone.

It is balanced. Stone and Marble are the least valuable resources in the game so the map places beteer things. I, myself, love to the have both but the effect would be wasted if everyone had some. and just to be picky, silver is usually rarer than both.

It's believed that the blue stones used in Stonehenge's inner circle were quarried in Carn Menyn, high in the Preseli Hills of Pembrokeshire. That's 240 miles from Stonehenge!

Well I've been doing custom game maps too long I think I just ran a "play Now" map and there is stone everywhere!

That won't matter, they're both using the same map script and BonusInfo file. There is a bit of a random element when it comes to resources, maybe that's what you're seeing.

Yeah it seems to be a much better roll this time.

Stone and marble in accesible areas may have been rare in ancient times... but more importantly would you rather have several resources of stone/marble and no copper/iron/horse? Strategic resources are critical.

I just like assitance with some of the Ancient world wonders, not all of them just the ones that don't expire mostly.

I think that there could be a little more without altering the distribution of copper/iron/etc. I think that's all the OP is getting at.

Exactly it's like their mocking me by placing the only stone/marble right next to another civ's starting city. Pretty much saying to me "If you want it your going to fight for it".

The resources are set so that you can not open with a canned strategy every time and expect success unless you play below your level. The resource distribution is indicative of this.

Wonders are often an iffy choice to start with - very expensive compared to alternates. Try to resist the urge to build a wonder unless you weight it against everything else you can build and still comes out in front...even if that means understanding the game a bit better.

I smile everytime a neighbour starts with stone or marble in BFC, just build some axes end before you know you have some shiny stuff, 2 capitals and experienced units

I had a cpaital with no ressources once...
not one.
0.

I was like ok, WTH?
It's probably like copper, uranium, coal, iron... right!

Went to worldbuilder.
Nope! No ressources AT ALL in my capital BFC.

It happended only once in my entire civ4 life though... I shoulda took a SS or keep the save but I was drunk (for real)
lol

I regenerated map until find stone or marble nearby instead.

Just yesterday I started a game as Hatty and had Marble in my capital. also have 2 corn,1 rice, 3 elephant, 3 hills, 1 Iron and lots of river tiles. The best start I can remember in a long time. With the marble I grabbed the Oracle and am now trying for the Great Library. Should get it. Turning this city into a great people farm.

Welcome Terasphere :banana::dance::banana:

Stone and marble are extreme game-changers compared to gold, etc. It can shift a major strategy toward the builder/SE route rather than warmongering (to an extent).

So it's not wonder (no pun intended) those resources are made rare.

See that's what I am talking about, there are a lot of Wonders that can be sped up with Marble or Stone. Which allows for quicker building of the Wonders. Glad you had a good start there IAM.
