This thread is about porting Civ IV to 64 bit.

I dare to ask the noob question, "why has no one ported Civ IV from 32 bit to 64 bit?"

I have asked this on several forums and all I get is "civ IV plays perfectly at 32 bit"

Duh!

I cannot find anyone who can cite legal restrictions or prohibitions from Firaxis or 2k.

There are so many huge mods now that cannot be played to thier full potential because of the 4 gig cap that I cannot understand why modders have not teamed up and made the 64 bit conversion long ago.
Looking on the web, it is easy to find precise instructions.
So if you are a programmer please enlighten me with a reasonable, logical answer that will allow me to feel good about suffering through half a game of C2C using viewports

Because there is pretty much no way to do it unless you are "them" (the company that owns the game). The source code for the .exe is not available and almost certainly never will be. The underlying game/graphics engine is licensed from a 3rd party, for one thing (it uses the Gambryo engine) so you'd have to convince them to release their code for free too.

You are also prohibited from doing much of anything with or to the .exe in the EULA anyway, so even if you could (for example) decompile the .exe and any relevant libraries and then rebuild it as a 64-bit program you still couldn't do it legally. See the BtS EULA's "License Conditions" section, part f. It goes something like this: You agree not to... "Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise modify the Software, in whole or in part".

Just to add ... When you run Civ IV BTS and you have at least 6 GB of RAM on your Windows x64 computer, you have usually a full 4GB available just for it. 4GB is usually more than enough for even the largest mods' e.g. like mine ;)
