I just bought Civ IV from Direct2Drive. After installing it, I go to play it and when I'm selecting a civilization to play with, the game stops working. The screen goes black but the sound continues like normal. When I go to the task manager it says that Civ IV is not responding. I'm desperate to get this working but nothing I do helps at all. I am in no way a computer expert and I need serious help on this.

Welcome to CFC :).

Do i understand it right, that it crashes when you select a leader on the civilization list?
What does happen if you go with "random"?
Can you look at the civs/leaders in the civilopedia?

Also some information about your system would be helpful, what operationg system you have, what graphics card, etc.

Yes, no matter what leader I choose. I have even tried running the tutorial and it hangs up at the same spot.

I have Vista but I'm not sure what my graphics card is or anything, is there somewhere I can look that up?

Click on the Windows button in the bottom left and type dxdiag in the search box. It should find dxdiag.exe, click on it to run it and use the button along the bottom (next to the exit button) to save all information. Add the resulting file as an attachment to a post here.

Is your user account an administrator account?

Right click on the .exe file (not a shortcut to it). Run as administrator should be the option after open. If not, select Properties (bottom of the options) and choose the compatability tab. There is a setting towards the bottom for Privilege Level to allow the program to run as administrator, check that then apply and close the properties, you should be able to double click on the file and still run it as administrator then.

I'm the only user on my computer, I don't know if that automatically makes me an administrator...
The only tab available when I go to options is General...
