I looked through the forums and only found a couple threads that dealed with my problem, but the solutions for them don't seem to work.

My problem is exactly like what DMOC had in his thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=279521

I go to install BtS and the game installs directX and then attempts to patch Civ IV and then it aborts.

What makes my situation unique, is how i have Civ IV gold edition, I can't patch it, and i don't know how to unpatch it in order to reinstall the patches (if it's possible)

I've tried everything that has been suggested on the civ site and in the read me but none of it has worked.

Not entirely i don't think i'd know where to go, nor what do, but i assume it involves notepad and altering lines of text.

actually it involves the program regedit - and I am hesitant to advice you to use it - you can make your operating system unbootable doing mistakes there, however unfortunately it seems the only way to get bts installed onto gold edition.
read the link below. especially the discussion between me an pyritefoolsgold If in doubt DON'T DO ANYTHING in regedit - ask :)

Well I'm always eager to learn. If you could help me out with what to do, then i'd be happy to do it. I think i'm good enough so that i won't just delete anything without knowing 100% sure if it's the thing i want to delete and i can always double check here to make sure. I'll take a couple screen shots as soon as you tell me how to get to the registry, with that regedit program (do i need to find it online, or is it usually included with windows?)

Alright, So yeah i found regedit. and i got this far

Also the reason why there are two Civ 4 things, is because i had borrowed one copy from a friend, i had uninstalled it, but for some reason it never completely uninstalled, should i delete this file, and if so, how? reading online, it says to delete a registry you have to "Deleting Registry Keys and Values
To delete a registry key with a .reg file, put a hyphen (-) in front of the RegistryPath in the .reg file. For example, to delete the Test subkey from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software
put a hyphen in front of the following registry key in the .reg file:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Test
The following example has a .reg file that can perform this task.
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Test]
To delete a registry value with a .reg file, put a hyphen (-) after the equals sign following the DataItemName in the .reg file. For example, to delete the TestValue registry value from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Test
put a hyphen after the "TestValue"= in the .reg file. The following example has a .reg file that can perform this task.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Test
"TestValue"=-
To create the .reg file, use Regedit.exe to export the registry key that you want to delete, and then use Notepad to edit the .reg file and insert the hyphen."

Do all that, but i noticed that in regedit you can delete them with the right click button (i didn't delete anything), i'm not familiar with this, and i don't want to cause any problems. so can you explain how they're different, and what i should do?

Also I made a system restore point just incase, i'm ready.

well the system restore point was a very good thing to do :)
now: actually the fact that you already have a non-gold vanilla string is not bad - could you show those contents? most likely all you need to do is right click on
sid meier's civilization 4 and chose new key then name that new key 1.74

Thank you very much, it worked, i'm now playing BtS. Thank you so much for not only fixing my problem but introducing me to the wide world of registry editing, I'm sure that knowledge will be useful in the future. I'll so some more looking into it since i'm only a novice at it.

But thanks again, you were very helpful.

I'm having trouble patching my copy of BtS now. It says that it's version 3.0.3.1 in the advanced menu, but when i try to patch the game using the ingame system nothing happens, and when i downloaded the patches separately and ran them, they didn't work at all. The game is still telling me that i have version 3.0.3.1

Is there any way to remedy this i have both patch 3.13 and 3.17. Trying to install them again tells me that they are both installed already, but i'm not entirely too sure. is there any way to check.

The installer starts up and every thing runs fine and they say that they've installed, but when i check the version it still says 3.0.3.1.

:hmm: one thing that could conceivably happen is that the registry edits that were necessary to install BtS do not work well with the patch installer - did it dump its files into a different folder perhaps? search for CvCoreGameDLL.dll on your computer... there should be one for Civ4 one for Warlords and one for BtS - and some inside the mods folders - if there is one outside the normal paths it might have dumped all the files there...

While searching doesn't yield anything. (I don't know why, but i did find some of the files separately)Picture related.

I found that i had both a firaxis folder and a 2kgames folder that it itself has a firaxis folder. The top part of the picture shows the contents of the firaxis folder and after the rest show the contents of the 2kgames folder I didn't know if this was significant, but it might help.untitled3.JPG

Also i noticed that the version for beyond the sword in the 2kgames folder is version 3.00.1 which contradicts what beyond the sword indicates (3.0.3.1) and what the patching sofware indicates (3.13)

3.0.0.1 is 3.13 - its still a mystery why take2/firaxis chose to name these versions thus :crazyeye: and more so why the 3.17 patch updates the version number to 3.1.3.1 :gripe: :crazyeye:

it seems as if the civilization 4 gold folder got patched - at least the .exe did - you should probably check also assets/cvcoregamedll.dll I hope that the other folder is not created by the patcher dumping parts of its files there - try starting the .exe that says 3.0.0.1 and then click on advanced and then on about this build - what does that say?

Oh, how confusing, at least i know it works. now. I'm now wondering about that other folder though... and why there are two.

But thanks again for the help. :goodjob:
