The first time I updated Civ IV (I recently purchased it) to the patch before the latest one, it did so in 1 try. When the latest one was announced, it required 5 tries to get it to work. Each time I pressed Adanced->Update the mouse cursor became a normal arrow and is moveable, and the music continues, but the computer appears frozen, as I cannot ALT-tab out, or even Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down the game nicely. I have had to manually turn off the PC to get out. Eventually, after 5 tries, it worked and I was able to patch the game.

For interest sake, I tried it again now that I have the latest patch installed, and the same problem occured.

I get no other freezes with the program.

Do you have Zonealarm or a similar program? This happened to me, and the reason is that I had it set to prompt me before allowing exe files to access the innernets. So the prompt was just sitting there, waiting for me to say ok, and the game was stuck trying to do it's thing. moral of the story; when you patch Civ, make sure you readd the exe to the allowed programs list of zonealarm or other firewalls, because you don't want to get stuck waiting for this game to timeout, as it seems the timeout is set very high.

Hope this helps!

You may have a point. On that machine I do have Norton Antivirus, and the first time I updated, it came up and asked if it was OK and I said Yes - but maybe after a new version of Civ is updated this confirmation is not linked up properly to the firewall. I'll have to check it out, thanks.
