[R&F] Civ of the Week: Macedon

there are three Civs with an "x happens upon Capturing a City", which are Alex (Macedonia), Shaka (Zulu), and Phil (Spain). Vicky (England) also had one of these abilities. What do people think about this type of mechanic generally? And which one is the most powerful?

Don't like it because it forces a playstyle. Of course it is fine to have a militaristic civ, with elite troops etc. - I often played the spartans in alpha centauri as hybrid faction, not always conquering, but also having times of peace, fighting "honorable" wars with my allies etc. Giving incentives to actually conquer cities means you get them only if you constantly conquer & consequently you are nailed down to a specific playstyle.

there are only four Civs with double Unique Units, which are Alex, Horrific Howling Harold and his Howling Commandos, Vicky, Teddy. What do people think of double Uniques? Does it work for Alex?

In general you should focus more on "cool" traits & not on "many" traits. Would Alex be different if he had only hetairoi? Do we need a second legion, aka hipaspist? Is the missing war weariness really changing your playstyle? Do you even bother building basilikoi? Don't implement stuff that doesn't change anything for the sake of it.

How does the Hypaspist compare to the Roman Legion?

They are ok/comparable, the best advantage is of course that they don't need iron & therefore help in those tricky situations when you lack strategic ressources. Legions' general combat advantage is slightly better.

Forget bronze working, just beeline horsebaclkriding. One builder for pasture eureka, 2nd builder for chops.

I typically beeline straight for it too. You don't really need to build an encampment right away because Hetairoi also give GG points.

I prefer the science that comes with the basilikoi, so in the long run I think I'm better off, because I can't wipe out all the civs in the classical like some people do.
Meanwhile, although my Kongo campaign was a resounding success, my hetairoi suddenly became obsolete at the Mapuche capital. Facing knights and using my golden age against me, I was forced to withdraw.
It is noteworthy, that if I hook up iron to upgrade to knights, then I won't be able to build any more hetairoi in my encampment cities and building knights there does not earn any science.

Instead, the military advisor suggests I commence a campaign against the Zulu. Although, in this case the hetairoi are not likely to fare well against impi. Perhaps, it is the turn of the hypopists to carry the load.

I mentioned in a previous post that Kongo was building Petra. Unfortunately, perhaps just 2 or 3 turns from completion, Mapuche captured the city where it was being built. Mapuche built Petra in its capital where it is barely better than a watermill. Compare this to Brussels where Kongo was building it:

and, by the way, what should I chop in the chopper's paradise of Malabo?

I finally finished my Macedon. So many units so much moving

So yes eurekas from building districts in a captured city (I assume districts but I only built campuses. It was a weird game because none of the AI were really building campuses so I got the first great scientist with one campus, one library, and the great scientist card)

And healing from building a wonder (but only in a captured city)

I have fun trying to figure out how to manage all the eurekas with them but otherwise they are pretty straightforward

I finished my game as well. First deity victory for me (unless you count a duel map where I did a straight legion rush :shifty:)

Random question, when do you retire your great generals/admirals? I still had 1 GG who boosted Renaissance and Industrial era units when I was in the Information era, just because I didn't feel like it was worth it to upgrade my cannons to machine gunners who were on barb hunting duty.

I retire them as troops improve except that first one and a hetairoi for my barb scout hunting (and sentimental reasons)

The idea of a hard counter is so dumb. I mean I get that war weariness should not impede Alexander, but then it completely negates India's ability. Which is silly, especially considering Alexander got wrecked by the Indians and suffered much war weariness.

Of course, I've never really had issues with war weariness being a problem because wars should never be drawn out, but what it does allow for is a much more reckless attitude towards war and throwing away units as you need.

That boost on capture is amazing though. Maybe I shouldn't have been so cheap with the DLCs. =p
