Yes, it's true that the Byzantine Empire is the longest lasting. The Roman Empire lasted much shorter than people think (27 BC to roughly 475 AD). The Chinese could be the longest running empire, but you'd have to pick which empire to measure. True, China has been a continueous entity through most of history, but it hasn't always been the same "empire". England is probably the closest choice to best the Byzantines. But, even if England has been a continuous nation since 1066 (which is debateble), that's still not as long as Byzantium. The Byzantine Empire lasted from 312 to 1453. So, yes, they hold the title for longest running empire.
