Civ V a step backward?

Fact - Speculation- simplification/amplification of diplomacy which was weak in all
versions-

Fact- Speculation- let your creative guys be creative- instead of following a direct path of addition- change it up

Fact- Speculation- expansions- seems like they always hold back content - no gripe-
biz is biz-

Fact- Speculation- when querried about civ most state things like invasions and war and how their empire expanded and units etc- leaving religion a distant thought

the evidence is clear- retaining the theme is more important than the elements

this is the superior
 
I liked civ2, liked civ3 and LOVED cIV and I think that ciV is going to be epic.
 
I will reserve final judgment until I see how it actually plays out, but it appears that the new miltary rules are going to give me a headache. Troop deployment and movement looks like it is going to become very complicated. That is not the part of the game I find most appealing, but I guess that is what the typical player (read "warmonger") might enjoy. I think I'll just stick with Civ4 until forum members who have actually played Civ5 tell me my fears are exaggerated.
 
Next question: Do they still have the Vassal state feature? I wish they'd get rid of that.

Not sure, but there was mention of "Puppet state" in one of the previews.
 
I love the Vassal states..so no probs there, but do hate the MAF that came with the patch from 3.0 BtS to 3.19...didn't have problems before that..may have to downgrade just to play

and yes I have tried virtually every fix that I could find on here...am hoping my latest attempt (userval=3028) plus and up to date graphics driver will work...doubt it..but...

MAFs are, sadly, a natural part of Civ4.
It's a design flaw they either can't fix or refuse to fix, though thankfully it doesn't normally rear its head unless you're pushing Civ4 to extremes your PC can handle, but older PCs can't.
 
A MAF means that the program can't get a requested chunk of memory. This can come from many causes. The simplest is if you are playing a very large game. There just isn't enough space left. By default, a program running in a 32 bit Windows OS can only access 2GBs of RAM no matter how much you have in your system. (There are ways to in some cases allow it to 3GBs, but they are not activated by default). In addition to problem of big memory usage, a more subtle, but much more likely cause is memory fragmentation. If a program asks for a small chunk of memory, when it is done with it, it may leave the memory in a chopped up state where the contiguous blocks of memory are very small. Many of the common programming patterns that people are taught are actually very memory unfriendly.

Civ4 actually has issues accessing the full 2 gigs due to the previously mentioned design flaw. So even if you know how to allow -most- programs 3 gigs, you're still screwed if you want to run the larger Civ mods and not experience MAFs.
