haven't heard whether or not there will be one. I think there was a demo out for Civ IV that was about 100 turns or something like that.

Will there be one, and do you think they should release it soon and get feedback from the community about it since most here are loyal fans of the game?

If they have a demo, for sure it won't be any time soon. The game isn't done! They can't release an external demo until they have an almost final version.

I read something about a demo from a magazine article linked from these forums, but I forgot which.

I heard about that too! A friend of My friend told said friend he'd vaguely heard someone deduce quite logically in a statement involving floating ducks and wood that there will in fact be a demo coming out for Civ 5!

A 100 turn demo of cIV? You could win the game by then on a standard 7 civ map!

I was just looking into that! I think I might get it... what with the new ideas in Civ5 seemingly being inspired by such being totally genius and filling one of the last holes in the Civ gaming experience; that being, having enough troops to conquer an entire continent the size of half the map in one tile was a little ridiculous, and not very strategic.

Still though A demo would show us all the basic stuff we need to plan our strategies for world domination, our imaginations would go wild with what we could accomplish 100 turns+, and if you're winning the game before then, well, maybe you need to develop your imagination a little more...

Rather I would need a higher difficulty level.
I'm not going to be angry if there's a demo but I do think that it's wasted resources if it at all delays the release of the game or cost time and resources that could be spent improving the game further.
As it is, I'm going to buy it as soon as it is available, I'm sure people on the fence would benefit more from a demo but why sit on a fence? We're talking about the greatest game series in computer gaming here, get a comfortable chair to sit in.

They need better AI is what they need. The previous versions were based off brawn and starting bonuses. With one unit per tile I'm hoping that means they're finally confident their AI can stand on a truly strategic level, rather than just throwing massive stacks our way... in the same spot... over and over...

I hope so too, the PG AI from what I remember is fairly competent. At least it knows enough to attack your most vulnerable units. OTOH I don't know how well it would fight on offense since you're almost always outnumbered and need to use all your resources tactically. It's a bit of the main theme that your army is quality and the enemy has quantity and/or superior defensive positions.

The sort of delaying retreat that you have to fight in Allied General (cousin game of PG) as the russians would also be more of a challenge for the AI where you have to decide which units to sacrifice and which to preserve and how much counterattacking is best and so on as you're continously retreating from a superior army.

Is that delayed retreat a specific scenario in your game? are you a programmer?? I have high expectations for the AI but even still I doubt this could be achieved competently barring some lucky unforeseen synergy between the various layers of tactical to strategic AI the DEVs have been talking about. It is just too involved for a very specific situation, for an AI that is programed for much more than a single tactical campaign.

I mean, I hope I'm wrong, I really do. That would be awesome, I just don't see it happening unless they delayed the game about 10 years.

Unfortunately the demo will only be made available to licensed shrubbers, or so I've heard.
Pity, because I can never find a proper shrubber when I need one.

No I'm not a programmer so I'm just going by my experience of AI in games in general. As you say there's a couple of specific scenarios in Allied General where you have to fight on the retreat and you want to avoid the enemies elite units but at the same time you want to involve your units in some fighting in order for them to gain experience or they will be toast in later scenarios. It can be a difficult balance to find, I suppose it would be even more difficult with freeform battles that are not layed down by the developers.
