Civ VI no compatible graphic device

I am rather disappointed myself, I shouldn't have to buy a new great gaming laptop every 5 years just to play the latest Civ.

That's the cost of progress I'm afraid Chris. 5 years is actually a decent upgrade interval compared to most gaming folks. You should consider yourself fortunate Civ is your only vice!!

Ok, another question. For the 17" Alienware laptop, for just playing Civ6 and absolutely not caring about any other gaming, for a GPU is the GTX1060 6Gb overkill vs the GTX970M which is 3Gb? Price delta is $200. Or will the higher end GPU make stuff like Turn Ends a lot faster and be tons better in other ways? The 4K screen does not seem worth the extra price vs the 1920x1080 fhd screen, but maybe I'm wrong there.

Turn times are effected by CPU and you need to be pretty careful here when purchasing as these can vary widely between laptop models. Either GPU is sufficient to play Civ but both the GTX1060 and 4k screen are much more future-proof and definitely something to consider with an average 5 year turnover rate. You'll be getting the value they offer when more media is available in 4k, for example, giving the device a new utility function. Plus, you have Steam now. How will you react when you log in and some game that might be worth a go is only 15bux in a sale? Are you truly *that* disciplined?

I have a few troubleshooting suggestions which will ensure that all supplementary software is installed correctly. Please, follow each of them in the order they are presented:

1. Verifying Game Cache
   · Load Steam.
   · From the Library section, right-click on the game and select “Properties” from the menu.
   · Select the “Local files” tab and click the “Verify integrity of game cache” button.
   · Steam will match the local files to the cloud files, and fix any errors it encounters.
   
   
2. Reinstalling DirectX
   · In the Steam installation folder of the game you’re having trouble with, there will be typically be a DirectX setup package.
   · Example file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meiers Civilization VI_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\
   · Find and run DXSETUP.exe
   · Reboot the computer (mandatory)
   
   
3. Reinstalling Vcredist
   · Navigate to your game’s Steam folder – there will typically be a Vcredist folder.
   · Example file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meiers Civilization VI\vcredist\_CommonRedist\2012
   · Find and Run vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe
   · Should the files already be installed, you will be prompted to either ‘uninstall’ or ‘repair’. Choose ‘*repair*’.
   · Reboot the computer (mandatory)

Afterward, do the same for those located in the 2015 folder. Ex: : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meiers Civilization VI\vcredist\_CommonRedist\2015

4.Run Steam as Administrator

1. Completely exit the Steam client.
2. Right click on Steam.exe
3. Select "Run as administrator"

If that doesn't resolve the issue, we will need to see your DXDiag and MSinfo files to perform a deeper investigation of your system specs.

This Support Article will show you how to access these files and attach them to your reply.

2k's next suggestion: Dxdiag says my drivers are out of date. Nvidia geforce experience says the are not. Reloading the drivers anyway.

OK. Its different. I reloaded the drivers and rebooted. Now I get a pop up window saying "Preparing to launch Sid Meier's Civilization VI" which then disappears and reappears about 10 or 20 times or more. The game never launches, but its not complaining about the graphics adapter. Progress?

Huzzah.
I had directx dev kit installed and was using the dxcpl to turn on software rendering so I could use my old card. I forgot to turn it off. The option to allow software rendering in civ6 settings was reset to 'disallow' when I reinstalled.
Dumb dumb dumb.
Kids - Don't do this at home.
I learned something, but it was a painful lesson.

Your video card only supports dx 10. Civ 6 requires at least a dx 11 card. Look at the Feature Levels of your card, not the ddi.

And the game will reject any gt2xx card. I upgraded to gt730 from gt220 and can play.
