Civ VII Requires 3rd-Party Account: 2K Account [Update: Required for Multiplayer Only]

The first I heard of it was when @lobosan posted it in the 'launcher has been removed'-thread. I do think this topic deserves its own thread though. I've long already linked my account so for me it's not going to be an issue, but I dislike if it's mandatory.

Apparently it's multiplayer only as confirmed by @FXS_Sar. It's also been added to the Steam page.

It changes little for me (I have the account), but I assume that's the cost for getting rid of the 2K launcher.

Not the best start to announce the removal of that feature, and then not mention it's been replaced by a required log-on somewhere else.

That's exactly what I thought. It feels two-faced.

It seems a bit silly as you can just create a 'burner' account you never look at again so not sure how it helps 2K.

Exactly. I‘m not going to make a problem out of this here… just want to mention that i was playing Civ6 without Julius Caesar because of this. Let‘s see if Civ7 will be a great game, otherwise, i fear i‘m not on board, and no, not only because of the required 3rd party account.

I did exactly that indeed. But I guess not everyone does it like that so 2K must get something, or think it gets something, out of it.

Surely not? Why not? There are plenty of games that require you to make an account to play the game.

I already have a 2K account, so it's not a big obstacle for me, but I will be peeved if the game has to verify my account in order to boot up the game. Goodbye offline playing.

That could be the case. Every game I play with cross-platform play requires that sort of account (for example, Street Fighter requiring a Capcom account for that reason).

Is the account required for offline play? That would be terrible and I would avoid the game in that case. I have no interest in online.

Accounts for multiplayer games are fine, but there is absolutely no good reason to require an account for single-player sessions. It better not be required.
