Civ wide unhappiness for no reason?

The strange thing though is that I had thought that reverse WW only happened when war was declared on you. In this case (as I detail in the above post), we declared war in all cases.

IIRC, in both the manual (cryptically, I think) and then again in a post by Soren (here or at Apolyton - and more clearly) there was a short mention of the "traditional enemy" effect. As best as I can make out, if you go to war with a civ that has become a "traditional enemy" your people seem to benefit from the reverse war weariness effect -- i.e., they are happy that you're kicking the **** out of those [insert civ name here] bastards. A civ seems to become a "traditional enemy" after 2 or 3 separate wars in the game. In my experience, even declaring war can result in the wartime happiness boost -- provided the enemy is a "traditional enemy."

I am no expert, nor did I look at the saved games, but I like Catt's post. I have personally seen that in action, when I declare peace and then a large number of cities go into revolt! Seems the only way to keep some people happy is to fight on! Sort of the reverse of what I would have thougth to be true so it always puzzled me.

Have been looking for more information about what you called 'traditional' enemies. I also thought maybe it was a factor tied in with 'Militarisitc' societies, since every time I had that happen it was when I was one, though that could easily have been inicidental (militaristic->more wars->more enemies->traditional enemies)

I agree completely with Oceanus and Catt.

In one of my current games, I was playing as the Chinese, and my neightbors, the Germans and Polish, have always been conspiring against me ( ). As soon as I finished up my Anti-British/American war (they kept disturbing the peace near my northern border! I had no choice but to eliminate the both of them!), I decided to eliminate 'em. Poland was right on my doorstep, so, naturally, I started a war with them. Next turn, half of my cities erupt into WLTKD, and the turn after that, several more. This goes on for a while, and then i finally whipe the last Polish city off the face of the world. Immediately, all my cities pop out of WLTKD. I regroup my forces and declare war on Germany. Next turn, those same cities once again burst into WLTKD.
Now, the Polish war began under Monarchy, but then about halfway through I switched to Republic, and the WLTKD didn't end until the war ended. I hadn't expirienced this in the war with Britain/America, since they hadn't bothered me too much, they were too busy fighting themselves. The only conclusion I can therefore reach is the 'traditional enemy' theory. It creates reverse ww, and as soon as you finish up the wars, the citizens become unhappy again.

traditional enemy... I like it. I have experience reverse WW before, although I am not sure if I have experienced it in monarchy, and it does indeed end as soon as peace is made.

Still this was a strange case. There was no peace declared anywhere near the riots. As I state in my post above it was more than 20 turns since any war declarations, and all those wars ended in the destruction of the enemy. The reverse WW did not wear off when we destroyed those civs, unlike the post above from Diamonds' above. Either the people were happy we destroyed our traditional enemys, or destroying them doesn't count as the end of the war and the reverse WW lasts longer than 20 turns.
