Just kidding!
This indeed is a message to Stormerne, the moderator.
A lot of people come and ask for this game.
They are not really evil (tho some are provos I'm sure), the game is old and hard to find, except maybe on ebay.
Maybe this site needs a more flashy banner "NO CIV1 DOWNLOAD" besides the "new topic" button,
or the procedure for being a new member could include reading of this rule.
The point is: including the rules among topics, even as sticky first one, is not enough, and some people post a topic without being aware of the rule. That's all I wanted to say!

If I had more advertising power in this I would use it. But I haven't so I don't.

I go by the assumption that when driving a car for the first time in a foreign country it's wise and courteous to read the local traffic laws first. Otherwise I would be running the risk of landing in jail and/or hospital and the locals would justifiably get mad at me. It would be up to me to find out. It wouldn't be up to the locals to spoon-feed me.

At the very least these posters are wanting in courtesy, and I don't tolerate that in my forum. If they are blatantly ignoring a warning then they are better off elsewhere.

Well actually I think that the sticky new users read this thread is quite easy enough to see, Wil...
I know that people who ask that kind of thing here are only the ones who never think about search engines, but still it's not a reason to let any of those requests go through. In respect to the rules.

I have found most of these posters very sincere in their quest for obtaining a copy of Civ1.

Lots of new folks don't read the sticky above concerning this.

I honestly don't think most of these folks wanting Civ1 are looking for it in an underhanded, illegal way. They just want it and they come here to ask where they can get it.

I got my copy in Computer Games magazine back in October 2001. It was sheer luck that I bought that magazine which was all about the upcoming Civ3 and it contained Civ1 on the free disk containing lots of other games.

Maybe the sticky should read like this: "Newbies, you can't get Civ1 free here!"

Of course they come here. It is a Civ1 forum. And it is normal to ask how they can get it.

I wish Firaxis or whoever would go on and reissue the game on a CD and charge $9.98 or whatever for it. So that people who really want the old Civ1 can get it legally.

stwils

Sure it's normal to ask how they can get it. But when some asks for a free copy, it implies they know that there's normally a charge. An honest thief is still a thief.

No ****! That's EXACTLY where I obtained about 4 or 5 copies.....small world eh?

Well i do know many places where you can get a free version of Civilization 1 but i never found a download that actually worked. Simply go to google and type Civilization Gamez Warez however if you actually want to get the game your in for a long ride of passwords redirictions so many downloads you wont be able to count them. i actually got a copy once but found i would have to get a password for a password for a password then re-download the game send an email to the person who hacked it wait 2 months then repeat twice. So in the end i have a totally usless version of Civ1 that i cant play unless i spend 6 months getting a number of passwords and downloads. Also most of the downloads are probobly spyware any way so why bother. I have decided simply to wait till it comes out for freeware.

But seriously, many of us scorn these users asking for Civ when we ourselfs have fully copies of the game we bought YEARS ago.

Those who want a copy have nowhere to turn to so they come here. We tell them " Go buy it on ebay!" well, Ebay doesn't always have a spare copy of the game. So where can the civ-fanatic who wants a copy of the game go any get it?

Well, we haven't addressed that yet now have we?

The answer is simple, but may not be obvious to a teenager living in the age of supposed instant gratification. You just wait.

Yes, but...

I bought my copy when it first came out but I no longer have an Amiga to play it on  I have tried all the 'lets run your Amiga prorams from 1988 on your 2003 computer' and they never seem to work.

I would  to play Civ1 again as I probably spent more time playing that then I have spent playing all the other computer games I have owned put together.

No complaints, just browsing here because I'm bored at work:help:

Not necessarily; many old games have been released for free (including plenty that are much younger than Civ1), so they may think it has been too.

Or they may be referring to magazine coverdisks featuring the game (Not strictly free, but people misuse the word 'free' in much worse ways than that).

Or they may had heard about the FreeCiv Project, which really is free, and makes a very good subsitute for Civ1 (or even Civ2 in some respects).

So no. I disagree with you that they're incriminating themselves simply by using the word 'free'. Yes, there may be some who are simply out to get something for nothing, but there's plenty of genuinely honest people out there who are asking the question.

My version is on a Combo disc but , i'd love to have the original boxed version in PC and Amiga formats(in mint condition;))..luckily i still have my Amiga!:) I reckon i might be able to find it on ebay somewhere, but they are collectors items now so they will probably have a more then modest price tag on them.

Hopefully some of those people are also intelligent people who read before they post and listen before they speak.

Sadly it seems many are not because they waste my time in reciting the same irritating litany which, for want of a few minutes prior research into information that is already here in this forum, they could have answered themselves.

I still have my original copy that I got more or less when it first came out, and for some time despaired that my computer is far too advanced to run such an old game. Lucky for me, my father and sister are both major computer geeks who assemble their own and never throw away old parts when they upgrade. So I had them put together a computer for me with ten-year-old hardware just so I could play Civ I again. (There were other bonuses to doing that, such as that I get to play the original SimCity again, and Rome: Pathway to Power. But the actual reason I had it done was for Civ.) :D

Ive actually found its increasingly easy to get hold of Civ 1 these days, anyone who wants Civ 1 should check e-bay and amazon theyve got quite a few copies

I found an illegal one in some odd language. I only found the one for windows (BLECH!!!)

I actually found the combo pack (civ and colonization) in a computer store about 7 years ago. I can never find the disk though so I have to search the underbelly. I would buy it again if I could find it.

BEST. GAME. EVER!!!
