I didn't find a mention of this anywhere, so I thought I'd post about this incase people missed it.

When you start a new game, you are shown a picture on a brown backround, and an almost unnoticable music is being played while the world is generated. Then the play game button appears, and most people probably click and start the game. BUT WAIT!

If you played Civ1 a million times (like I did) you just might recognize that tune. Don't click play, but listen and wait. It is the tune from Civ1's intro! And if you wait just a bit longer, you hear Leonard Nimoy's voice reading that all too familiar line: "In the begining, the Earth was without form and void"

And by now you've probably realized whats going on. It's the intro movie from Civ1 recreated for Civ4! Great stuff, and very easy to miss if you're too anxious to start the game :D

yeah, I noticed that too. It's really cool. They're definitely trying to bring the atmosphere of the old civs into the new release.

Paradoxically, Civ 1 is the only game in the civ series that I no longer have a copy of.

Just for kicks I installed all the previous civs, just to have a look at the progress made over the last ten years of the franchise. It's actually quite incredible how simplistic Civ II appears in comparison to Civ IV... and Civ I was even more basic

:) Yeah, it almost got a tear out of me, the first time I played. Reminded me of the (good) old Amiga days.

WHen i play civ1, i don even have a soundcard , err midi card.

I remember that, too :-). Perhaps Civ 5 will have the animated advisors from Civ 2, i loved them but there where too few animations and sentences.

In fact i bought my first PC because of CIV 1 (played on C64 until that time). That game is the reason i am involved with PCs since the 386 time and is the reason why my occupation became software release coordinator.

Civ1 was also my first PC game. I played it endlessly on my 486 with 8 MB of RAM (or was that 4 MB...) and a 120 MB harddrive... I still have all Civs stored somewhere... Maybe I should take a weekend and play a game of each :D

Well, back to Civ 4 ;)

It is great to see Firaxis paying homage to Civ1 again. I can remember when I first fired up a map in Civ4 and left the computer (went for a :smoke: :crazyeye: ) and heard this strange, yet familiar music. Then Leonard Nemoy's voice "In the beginning..." ... Well, I'll proudly admit, a tear came to my eye (like Scarl posted earlier) and then all the memories came flooding back and of the many hours I wasted for nights on end - just one more bloody turn. You'd think I would've learned by now! ;) CivAnon for me... And yeah, I originally played it on the Amiga too. Ahhh... Those were the days!

Thanks Firaxis for taking me back :)

I realized that in my first world... and a tear dropped on my cheek.

I recognized the tune too. I think that every Civ1 player does, after all, we listened to this melody dozens of times, because generating the map in Civ1 took its time and you always ended up listening to to the tune. Great idea to pay homage to Civ1 this way.

Well, it's not just the intro music from Civ 1 - the civilization specific music you used to hear when you research a tech (for civs that were in the old game, like the Romans) can be heard at the start of the game and at other points near your cities.

I thought it was a nice touch.
