Civ1 Must Hate My System...

I have a problem running Civ1 on my system. When I've installed it, everything runs as normal...except for 2 things:

1. My computer doesn't seem to like DOS games, such as Civ1 (my version has two 3.5" floppy disks - had the game for a while). It used to run better on my old 486 (I now have a Pentium II), which liked DOS programs.

2. Because of reason one, the only way I can run the game is when I'm using Windows (98)...and the problem? ... Waaay too slow! It takes about 10 seconds to fade in then out sometimes.

Is there anything that I can do that will make my system run DOS programs as they used to? I miss playing the classic version.

Any suggestions?

And you don't want to switch to WinCiv? It will work, guaranteed! Of course it hasn't got the old DOS-feeling to it but the game is the same.....

From what I read in other posts here it's pretty much available all over the world in the bargain departments of computer stores. It's just on CD and shouldn't cost you more than a couple of dollars. Otherwise you can try eBay or alikes.

Yep. I tried playing Civilization 1 on my Xp computer, I tried the windows edition, but only a few minutes later I restarted my computer to choose Windows98. It`s not the Civilization feeling I had many years (ago)

So search for a old computer. Or use dual/multi-bootsystem. (I have both and so I am 100% Civ1 compatible ;)

When playing WinCiv, you will get a more satisfying experience if you set your screen resolution back to 640 by 480.
Looks a lot more like the real thing this way, although the unit graphics are still not so nice and plains are still an ugly brown.... sigh :-(

i used to have the same problem, as it turns out u need to edit some of your "sysedit" files, and unless u really know what to do, i suggest u just forget it.

Heres how i did it :
Add these lines to your CONFIG.SYS
(Both need to go after the line DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS)
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB

IF you decide to do this and once in DOS mode u cant get back to windows, simply type "edit config.sys" whilst in C:\WINDOWS\
delelte the lines and it will be back to normal. ONLY do this if you are certain you can do all this without harming your system.

Another suggestion is to right click on your command prompt in windows and click the tab "Programs" then click on the "advanced" button, select "Prevent This Program From Detecting Windows." This could solve your problem.

Had the some problem months ago on my Win98 system and remember I was able to solve the sluggishness by selecting one of the sound options, IBM something iirc. I am not on my desktop at the moment, to be 100% sure I should check this evening.

i recomend you try this first

"click the tab "Programs" then click on the "advanced" button, select "Prevent This Program From Detecting Windows." This could solve your problem."

right click your civ icon, click properties and follow these steps^

then run DOS in WINDOWS, CIV should ignore the fact your running in windows and run faster.

in windows:
if this doesnt work, then goto start menu, click run, type "sysedit" without "" and then goto the section titled CONFIG.SYS and add the changes. then run full DOS mode by restarting in DOS or using a bootup disc.

-or- find msdos mode for games with xms and ems support.pif under \windows directory. just double click file and...

I just reinstalled Civ1 on my system, and decided to test how it runs on it. Here's my results:

Windows: Runs the way it should, except the fact that it's quite slow.

DOS Mode: Runs the speed it should - but for some reason it doesn't detect my mouse! Even if I select it as I start the game (choose screen settings, sound, mouse/keyboard, etc).

From all this, I've found that if I want the game to play the right speed, I need DOS mode, and to use the mouse, Windows.

Is there anything I have to do to get my mouse working in DOS mode? Because I somehow doubt that I can speed up the game in Windows.

After the first won conflict, you find that in Windows mode it suddenly runs normal speed!:confused:
