I play in king level, try to be peaceful to win space race.
I do everything to have good production in my main cities, I make trade routes, superhighways etc... to have good science production, I always get spaceship technologies first but always lose space race.
Usually a stupid diplomat(not spy) comes into my land, steals space flight, but he have not even discovered flight and starts building SS structurals. And I notice that in same turns 10-15 his cities complete them. And next turn the same thing appears. He gets spaceship with 39 structurals... and maybe 6 modules + a lot of components... flight time 6 years. I personally never manage it, even I rushbuild. I think It is possible, but I smell a little cheat by AI.

The second thing that is not fair is ... when I start diplomacy, the AI starts to threat me, I think I should have first word to say not he/she. And why I cannot tell to AI ... give me secret of banking or you will die. I can only demand money.

Basically, the AI is stupid, so the only way to make the game harder on the higher levels is to let the AI cheat. There should be a thread around with all the cheats the AI does... Your upper hand though is that you can trade. This will give you more money, science and power than the AI could ever get despite the cheats. Every time you deliver a caravan or freight, you will receive a message of how much you profited. The number could range from 3g to a couple thousand. At the same time you will receive the same number of beakers towards your next discovery. Once you've set up a good system for sending caravans to another civ, you can easily get one tech per turn, and earn thousands of gold. Just keep sending caravans... This should give you such a head start that you won't lose the space race...

When it comes to spies, placing spies in your cities will help in preventing theft from other civs. You can never get a full protection, but it can help. And also, placing look outs to expel or kill any spies approaching could also help. I'm not sure, but I don't really remember having this problem myself. Usually the AI are so backward that they can't pull off the production needed to build a space ship quicker than me, and most of the time, any action the AI takes is just random, and not coordinated towards a goal, so they never really achieve much at all.

AI may be backward, but they can steal space flight without having flight, that's stupid. I've lost a lot of space races because they can produce even 6 SS modules in same turn they get superconductor.

BTW : I also use caravans.
In civ3 the space race is a lot of easier.

I play on king level and I don't have a problem getting the spaceship off before the AI - It isn't hard to leave the AI in the dust in terms of science. You just have to learn how to manage trade and all that.

Well, there is. But it's not really a thread. I hate the AI in scenarios. They always play the same, it's annoying. They never go along with the scenario!
