Civ2 Source Code Petition

What exactly did you say to them? Perhaps you needed to be more aggressive. I'd do it but I don't have the time.

You may have to re-send the e-mail, fax it and phone the actual contact in order to get a response. (If you're like me, you aren't that great at convincing phone-based negotiation, so you may want to get someone more experienced to do that.)

:goodjob:

Add me to the list

Why am I not on the list?

here's my email adress:

(for obvious reasons I didn't write it down as text - to secure against spam crawlers)

So this thing is dead?

Shouldn't you wait until HT confirms that before drawing any conclusions?

Response from Soren Johnson at Firaxis - 12:30 PM EST, June 2, 2005.

"...Firaxis has zero control over the Civ2 source code. I’m not even sure who owns it right now (probably Atari or Take2)."

Ok, now that it's settled that Firaxis does not control the code I think we should move on to Atari and Take2 as Soren says. I replied to his email and asked if he knows of any contacts I could send the petition to but he has not responded back as of yet.

Harry Tuttle hasn't said anything about resending it yet, so my "conclusion" is quite believable.

The reason why your name is not on the list is that I stopped accepting signatures June 1st as can be seen by the repeated notices on the main page and in this thread.

There was a cutoff because the petition was sent to Firaxis, Atari, and then TakeTwo in its full form. Currently I am looking for someone to take over for me as I don't have the time to do this.

The petition is NOT DEAD and if you wanted information on this you could have emailed. I don't post on this site anymore, so please don't take my silence as some sort of "fact" so you can draw conclusions.

Sorry to be terse, but after putting this thing in its full form, asking for help from anyone I could find, coordinating the petition with other sites, and coordinating with other very nice signature petitioners I am a little bit burnt out. If you have any concern about the future of this petition please step forward and help instead of being negative.

Any takers? I've been asking.

Well, I don't really have time to do this but I will try and do my part (aside form signing the thing). Will contact you via e-mail.

Oh and you've done a fine job BTW.

I'm in.

WE WANT THE SOUCE CODE! ENOUGH OF AI STUPIDITIES!

I still don't quite understand why we should have the civ2 source-code before the civ1 code. I mean, us down there at the civ1 forum have been waiting waaay longer for a code release..

@dominus romae: The petition has already been sent (as HT mentioned above). If you are offering to help out with any work that needs to be done on a 'player version' of the game were the source code to be released, then all you can do is wait and hope at the moment.

@trada: Reasons why not to petition for Civ1 source code: 1) not enough interest, 2) program too old, 3) highly unlikely source code exists.

And quite frankly, Civ2 is essentially a significantely improved Civ1 so the only reason to even talk about Civ1 is for reasons of nostaligia--which isn't the (primary) purpose behind the release of the Civ2 code.

Not enough interest? NOT ENOUGH INTEREST? Dude, I bet there's more people in this world longing for an optimized civ1 rather then a better civ2. Program too old? What's that meant to mean? Why is civ1 and civ2 not? Where's the line? And you say it's unlikely source code exists. Why?

Why? You can get two version s of civ2 for free off this site.
Only time I've seen civ1 for sale it was $25. YEs, I know, that store has made a couple of bad chocies, they still have several other games like simcopter for 25-40 $ CAD. THey also have a bunch of left over n64 stuff wich they can't get rid of either.

So you can get a "better" game for free, but pay up the rear for a "not so good" one?

Civ I vs. Civ II is just like Civ II vs. Civ III: you'll have endless arguements, but no one will switch sides. Just don't even try, for this thread's sakes.

If so then why don't you start a petition for the Civ1 source code? The people who signed this one are interested in getting the Civ2, not the Civ1 source released. (So Civ1 can't just be added into the petition, if that's what you're tying to say.)

Civ2 just took Civ1 and added functionality that was dearly needed in Civ1 and made it more user-friendly (think of it as Civ1a--an idealized Civ1 if you will).

Civ3 improved the original concept along similar lines but was really a seperate project.

Civ2 is the release that set the standard. There is no argument here.
