Found ToT really cheap in a local shop and just wanted to check if the Fantastic Worlds and Gold scenarios will work with it.

(Should this go in some other section?)

BTW: Which version's better - Multiplayer Gold Edition or Test of Time?

ToT unless multiplayer gold comes with it.

:crazyeye:

You mean you can run ToT and Gold Edition together?

But do the Fantastic Worlds and Gold Edition scenarios work with ToT alone?

And what is (are) the advantage(s) that Gold holds over ToT?

I dont know what the various versions come with.

All i know is ToT comes with some great built in mods (Not normal mods these are very worth it!).

The mods are the midgard scenario, fantasy scenario, sci fi scenario, and expanded original.

Id get ToT if i were you though its better IMO.

The main thing I wanted to know is, If I downloaded the scenarios from this site that require Fantistic Worlds or Gold, would I be able to run them on ToT?

I'm sorry for being an ignorant bum, and thanks for the help so far.

Ok i got ya. I think ToT is considered a completely different game. It has the same engine but i dont think you can use other scenarios for it unless they were made for ToT.

But im not 100% sure of this but im pretty sure of this.

You're right. Scenarios for MGE or FW do not work on ToT.

However, Angelo Scotto made a little program that can convert those scenarios to ToT format. It's a little cumbersome and has some problems, but this guide should help you along nicely:
http://users.tpg.com.au/jpwbeest/jp_conversion.htm

In addition to that, on the Apolyton Civ2 creation forums they've converted some classic Civ2 scenarios to ToT, creating great, new graphics for them along the way:
http://apolyton.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=29

For any scenarios that haven't already been converted, you can always drop by here or on Apolyton and ask others to help you convert it... Just make sure you try it yourself first.

So with that out of the way, ToT is the better of the two.
One thing, though... ToT's graphics are horrible. Have a closer look at that first site I linked to for replacement graphics, Civ2 version comparisons and a FAQ.

Thanks a lot, chaps. :goodjob:

I like vanilla CIV II.

Huh? *SvenSlayer kicks himself at once again having to reveal his ignorance.*

(I prefer chocolate myself.)

Edit: Oh wait! Do you mean the standard version of Civ2?

I've only seriously played the original version. I've played MGE a few times, but it wasn't my copy. ToT should be interesting to try.

I play both Classic and MGE. I am partial to MGE because it has a few "bells and whistles" that make it easier to manage cities. On the other hand, Classic is nicer because the AI does not have that unending, raging, hostility for the human player that MGE has.

And I just bought a copy of ToT on ebay yesterday, so as soon as it arrives, I will try it out. :D

I never play any other kind. :)

ToT includes the Original Game, should you still want to play it, but you also get the Science Fiction game, the Fantasy Game, the Midgaard scenario, and the Extended Original game (in which you get to play the Alpha Centauri aliens if you choose!).

What you don't get (that I miss from the regular Civ 2) are the Throne Room, Wonder Movies, and a Map Editor. But I suppose including those for all the various worldmaps would have been too cumbersome... however, it's fun as it is.

Ali,

The major difference is that the AI in MGE seems to reset to a hostile attitude every turn. I have gifted it up to Enthusiatic and the very next turn it is hostile. This is very important if one is trying to get allies and "gifts" from the AIs in the early game via MP. AFAIK, this is the only game play difference between the two versions. However, in MGE, you can go to any city screen and from there, cycle through all your cities by using the Up/Down arrows. This is much handier than going through the F1 screen. Also, in the find city list, the cities are in alphabetic order instead of a random listing.

The AI hostility in MGE is why OCC players use the Classic version. In MGE, the AI would make OCC next to impossible to survive.

And, of course, MGE, was/is designed for multiplayer use. Sid repeated his little trick of selling a second game to players who wanted human competition, just like he did with the original Civ and Civnet.

But they're still present if you play the original version within ToT, I hope?

I think you get the throne room possibly, but you dont get animated diplomacy or wonder movies.

edit: You also dont get the high council.

Sorry, no Throne Room, no Wonder Movies, no High Council anywhere in ToT. I never actually noticed about the animated diplomacy, since all I ever worry about with diplomacy is getting their tech, maps, and money. The animated heralds aren't anything I miss.

But all the different maps more than make up for it:

Original/Extended
Alpha Centauri
Funestis
Orbit
Naumachia
Nona
Surface World
Underwater
Underground
Sky World

Midgaard (made up of the various other Fantasy elements, but with a few unique features)

The absence of the Map Editor isn't an issue; Mercator modified the official Civ2 Map Editor (as distinct from his MapEdit utility :mischief:) so that it can be used with ToT. Unlike the original, it also supports gigamaps. You can download it here. I've read (here, for example) that you can get wonder movies to work in ToT by taking the AVI files from earlier versions and placing them in ToT's Video folder.
