Well so far i've been unimpressed with civ3. it's not a bad game, but it's definitely not the incredible classic that civ2 was. While i really hope the patch will help improve the game play, i have shelved the game for now.

to fill the new void i went out and picked up europa universalis 2. if you're in the same position as me i highly recommend this game. the game play on it is incredible and while it isnt the most bug free game in the world i havent seen any game play options horribly mangled as in civ3 (planes). i spent almost eight hours glued to my computer on sunday playing the hell out of it. which is something civ3 has never come close to inspiring me to. who knows, i may not go back to civ3 :P

check out the game reviews at gamespot if you wanna know how it plays: http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/reviews/0,10867,2828192,00.html

I just get tired of the same old with that game. You are so limited in scope unless you choose one of the BIG nations, and things are so predetermined- WHEN you get your GL's, what your tech level is at, how fast tech goes for YOU, how much things cost (for YOU), when your next King is due, et. al. I can't believe people gush all over that game only because it's prescripted method approach makes it seem more historical...

It made it seem more boring and like playing inside alittle box... the two games just don't compare. Civ is a game and EU2 is more like a simulation with some limited what-if capabilities.

Oh and did they EVER fix the Bankruptcy imbalance in the game? I swear going bankrupt every 5 years made a nation *strong* and had no real practical disadvantages... in fact it could save your nation.

I agree, I don't like UNI 2, it really can't grab my attention, my young nieces enjoy it though.

Civ III is not so incredibly buggy that it ruins the game, I have been playing CIV versions for 5 years, and now I am on Civ III and still haven't noticed any bug that even wories me at all. Maybe I am more easy going and see CIV III as a game, not a life determining gas.

I play monarch level, and well non of my opposition in the 3 games I have played have even once made an aircraft, it is called beating them down early and then keeping them down so they never advance to that stage, therefore I have never noticed the flight bug, even when i finally get to aircraft i already have better ground war tools and railroad , or transports, so planes are pointless and useless in my games anyway.

basically I see a huge amount of whining about the buggy program, but this very experienced player hasn't even noticed them, just enjoyed playing the game. Oh and as for corruption, no fix needed there as many bleet about, i love it, it adds strategy and it works if you play it well, maybe all the complainers are just not onto it enough to sort out a real strategy for a real strategy game.

I don't think I'll ever get sick of Civ3. :) I started playing it again today after a week layoff, and just finished a game a few minutes ago. I was able to win via diplomatic victory, and by speeding up the rate at which techs are discovered, had everything falling into just about historically accurate time-frames. (Didn't learn flight until about 1930, and fission at about 1960.) It was a great game too. In the beginning, the Russians and Greeks destroyed the Egyptians to one tiny city on a tiny island. That is where the Egyptians remained the rest of the game. Otherwise, me (the Romans), Germany, Greece, and Russia all got along great. Not a single war throughout the game. We all traded just about everything, and although I never had any iron, I got by just fine with some trades. I built a ton of trade/commerce structures, and at one point had 10,000 gold, with 100+ coming in each turn. So money wasn't a problem for me. I then went and built the United Nations, and thanks to some of my spies, found out that I had built it one turn before the Russians could. PHEW! I saved the game, then went and gave Cleopatra all the techs that I could give her, and a lump sum of about 2000 in cash. She was grateful towards me, the Russians were grateful towards me, as were the Greeks and the Germans. So I held the vote, and the only ones who didn't vote for me were the Russians and Greeks. Myself, Egypt, and Germany voted for me, so I got my first diplomatic victory! :) Since I saved the game before I won via diplomacy, I'll probably go back and play it so that I can win via space-race. (I'm in a position to do that as well.) So this game is great fun, and to me at least, it's as addicting as Civ2 ever was.

I loved civ2, I was playing it until I got civ3. In civ2 once you won on deity the game was beat, there are posts on civ 2 sites that can walk you through beating deity with one city. Because of the improvements I don't thik that will ever happen in civ 3. There are just so many different civs to play. I still haven't played them all. Also just think of the expansion packs possible, they will add mp and probably add new civs with new uu's. Also the ways to win really increase the enjoyment.
My first game lasted less than five minutes on deity, I came up with the brillant idea of killing an English scout' and thus taking away their early advantage. Well that scout was the first and last victory I had in that game. I laughed and went to chieftan, I also began to read the book which is a must because this game is not intuitive. If I ever stop playing this I will try one of those games that you guys have mentioned.

Nope... it's Heroes of Might and Magic III for me... this game just NEVER seems to grow old... no matter how much "down time" I have on this game, whenever I pick it back up and play it for a bit, I just go "wow... what a great game"... I think Heroes III is one of the most perfect games made... now I only wonder how Heroes IV will be... they're changing a lot more in Heroes IV over Heroes III compared to the changes from Civ2 to Civ3... I hope I won't be disappointed!

I played in Civ since 1991, and last monthes I play in EU1. It is really good game (I think EU2 is (for me - will be :)) at least a little better. :)

But it have a strong limitations... :( You must keep a money for a YEARS (game calculates in days) for constructing a ugly Manufacture... Hmmm. It is not good, I want a wide capabilities of strategy...

I think this is not Civ-like game. :)

Look at the topic "Civilizaion PBEM" - really GOOD strategic Civ-like game.
