Civ3 High Score Hall of Fame

Yes, it's very predictable. I reload some of my early non-critical games to see if I can jump my palace. So far, it has jumped to the right target everytime.:) Thanks again both of you for the good info.:)

Well it's been like 5 years since China's sneak attack which had me so freaked out and it's basically all over for them. With drafting I got my Army from weak to strong. All they're doing now is hitting my roads with arty. Well, they threw their last 2 Modern Armor away on my Mech Inf, but they still won't see my envoy. They're just being jerks about it. I've taken a few cities on the last 2 turns and taken out all of their MA. I keep getting Great Leaders which I use to make ICBMs. I was really hindered cause I had jumped my palace to an island and irrigated every square. I had sold all my factories and airports. I was just cruising along working on milking thinking my army was big enough to deter him. I forgot about the AI D$^#head factor. That is where they do stupid stuff just to mess with your score and won't see your envoy. I did one stupid thing though. I switched to war economy and yet I haven't made a single unit. I could make some around the Forbidden Palace but the war will probably be over soon. Hopefully this little 'bump' won't affect the score too much. I have the 2 wonders that put the granaries on all the cities on the continent and the 2 pop for 1 when the box is full one. Also, the one that puts out all the barracks. Basically I'm attacking on one turn with 100 arty and all the Modern Armor then healing for a turn, then repeating with arty attacks during the rest turn. So, is there a trick to getting those stupid envoys to see you??? Hopefully on the next game I'll make a prettier map to display. Here's the current F3 (127 workers + slaves):

To all the players of Patch 1.29f:

I have discovered a new exploitation. I was just playing with a non-critical true random map game (random of everything) to warm up for the big game and noticed serveral new features:

  • AI's behaviors are very preditable!
  • AIs behave honorably! That means they don't break treaty and backstab me like they used to.
  • AIs like to trade their resources with me.
  • AIs likes to take things from me for free. Of course, they have always done this in the past too; the different is that they are now appreciate my gifts more then they used to.
Base on those variables, I have come up with a brand new method for taming the world.:D

If you want to go to war with 1 civ but worry that it may get other civs will join in. Stop worry! Just give a gift of 1 gold per turn to each other civs and they will leave you alone for the next 20 turns. Just like I said, they appreciate my gifts more and they behave honorably now; they won't declare war against me no matter what I do after that.:) The bottom line, for as little as 1 gold per turn, I can buy peace forever. Basically, now I can go to war with 1 nation at a time.:) Note: This method will work if they don't don't have any prior mutual protection pacts with other civs.

I dont see that as an exploit just a good tactic :)

To Rufrydyr

Ive just read your postings. Is that an emporer game ?
That map looks terrible I dont think I could have slept at night knowing that China could attack from any angle :(

GOODBYE FOR A WHILE

Im leaving Japan soon on the 31st July 2002. My Computer has
been sold and is getting picked up on the 28th July 2002.

After arriving back in Australia I will be leaving to go to Europe
soon for a 3 week holiday arriving back on the 1st Sept.

Just thought I let you know so you arent wondering about why I
havent updated anything or confirmed games etc etc

Cheers

JFL_Dragon

Yep JFL_Dragon it's an Emperor game (and my 1st at that--I've been steadily moving up the levels). I got lulled into a false sense of security. I'll miss you, have fun in Europe. Feel free to go to a cyber cafe and send a card or something...
That's good to know Moonsinger! The more predictable the AIs are, the easier it is to mess them up! I can't wait to get through the last few tedious years of this game (fixing roads, irrigation, pollution, etc.) and moving up to Deity level with the new patch. I'm a little hampered though, cause I'm trying to teach myself Visual Studio so I can make SuperStat (formerly Cstat). In between civfanatics, playing Civ3, and working on that, I try to eat and stuff. LOL (sometimes I say 'hehe' instead of LOL). :)

[dance] :smoke:
Ahhhh! My war is finally over in 1958 (8 years). I had hit China with like 12 nukes, but i sent the last one to his capital as a parting shot after he saw my envoy. LOL. Now I can finish this thing off!

Help me quick. I'm really REALLY close to getting on the HOF. But it all depends on one thing.

The only time I ever got a diplomatic victory was one time I just got bored of playing. I had just built the UN and another nation had just attacked me (the second most powerful after me). So I signed mutual protection pacts and military alliances with every other civ so as to assure my victory. I expected to finish with 2300 points, but instead got 3300 points. Just to be sure does this mean you get a 1000 points bonus for a diplomatic victory? Is there any bonuses for other sorts of victories? If so I haven't noticed.

I know all that seems very off topic. But if I hear good news on this front I'll post up a picture or two of my current game. Here are the specifics.

Monarch
Huge Map
80% Water
Continents
16 Civs
Persians
Barbarians - can't remember.
The game was so crowded there probably wasn't much room for them.
All victories turned on.
Cultural linked starting poitions turned off
Random Seed is on.

Actually I'll post a picture anyway.

I've never posted any screenshot or link before, but here goes.

Sorry. I didn't know it'd come out that big. :(

Anyway it's version 1.21

The Babylonians, Russians, English, Iroquois, Chinese, Zulus and Japanese were all blown away by me (though it was not neccesarily I who destroyed their final city on whatever remote rock it may have been). God bless those Immortals.

The French, Indians and Romans were killed off by the Egyptians. (Though the Aztecs had a hand in the Roman demise).

Which leaves 6 civs remaining. The Greeks, Germans and Aztecs were left in their present predicament by myself.

Which means that only 3 of the 16 starting civs have the same land they started with (and then some). The Egyptians, Americans and I.

The Egyptians are currently allied with myself in war against the Aztecs and Americans. In a few turns time (as even just one of us would have the power to kill off both of them) it should be just myself and the Egyptians left in positions of power. And the Greeks and Germans as also rans.

I am currently undecided whether to try for the diplomatic victory (which would be hard as I am the least loved, especially by the Germans and Greeks). Or to invade Egypt (where there is already a large population) and abandon most of my cities on the Western continent (except the ones giving me luxuries).

Also I'm not fully sure what the year is, but it is late enough. Whatever decision I make I'll have to stick to. It's circa 1920.

Finally I am far and away the most advanced. I've just got future tech 1, while the Egyptians have only now, in the last few turns, entered the modern era.

By the way. I'm not asking for advice. I'm just outlining my situation.
Although I would like info on the diplo victory, or any other victories that do similar.
I did look at the FAQ, but htheir wasn't anything on victories.

EDIT: Just remembered that I'm afraid to kill off the Egyptians completly as they are preventing me from getting a cultural victory. My overall culture is about 130,000. I'm afraid that if I take over the Egyptian homeland my culture may finally overtake theirs.

You get a bonus for the date at which you trigger any victory condition. The formula is (2050 - Date) * Difficulty, Difficulty rated 1-6, Chieftain-Deity. The type of victory doesn't matter.

baleog:
u just need to tune up ur game a little bit.
1) watch to make sure u remain under the domination limit.
2) kill off the remaining civilisations but leave 1 egyptian city.
culture is cumulative so egyptian culture will buffer u for a while.
in the meantime, disband ur cultural buildings - if u are researching future tech 1, u dont need libraries, universities and research labs. if u have all 8 luxuries u don't need temples, cathedrals and colloseums...

there's a thread out there about milking a game but i can't remember the link. check the strategy pages...

Hi Everyone

Just about to fly out but I thought I let you know, we have a
new serious contender for the HOF.

I received a 45K+ Deity level result on a 160map.
1.21 patch with no scout denial. It will put Sir Pleb to number 3 The player hit domination with the old deity at 1200-1300AD, but ofcourse milked to 2050.

He did not ISC but was a couple of techs into the industrial age by 10AD and was fighting cav vs cav at that stage. He played with 16 AI civs on a huge (1.21) pangeau map. The civ used was
America

Cheers

JFL_Dragon

oh wow!
i am beginning to appreciate america....
i am trying to get a feel for them...real fast workers, the industrial shield bonus, scouts can collect techs from all over the place.

i haven't tackled my iroquoi game yet because i am trying to solve my tech backwardness problem.

Should HoF winners without Preserve Random Seed be removed from the HoF?

I saw that Duke of Marlborough said reloading to redo combat is illegal, though I haven't read all 34 pages of this thread.

The only purpose of getting a different random seed is to get a different result on reloading. People who want to clarify to the world that they didn't reload to get different results would obviously Preserve Random Seed. I think we should conclude that people who didn't Preserve Random Seed cheated, and their games removed from the HoF.

It is conceivable to me that a high scoring game was submitted under rules that didn't specify to Preserve Random Seed. When was that done? (Though even so, having some games from one set of rules and later games from more restrictive rules seems like comparing apples and oranges.)

What do you think, Duke? Should HoF games without Preserve Random Seed be removed from the HoF?

Duke is no longer in charge of the HOF, JFL_Dragon is. Preserve Random Seed was only added in v1.21f, so games played before that didn't have the option to turn it on/off. Random seed wasn't in the rules, so I don't know if we should remove old games that didn't have that. I always have it on.

JFL_Dragon is going to separate all games with games played with patches prior to 1.29f on one table, and all those played with the new patch on the other table. In about a month when he comes back from Japan, he will have a definite set of rules, and Preserve Random seed should be in that set of rules.

Well, the guy who got that high score played with 16 civs, so I doubt he got alot of techs. With minimum civs you can get a ton of techs. However, the scouts enable you to establish fast contact with everyone making buying techs cheap with that many civs. The fast workers really helps out the Americans. And with expansionists you have a much better chance of getting a settler from a hut.

I keep flip-flopping on who I should play. Since the player is handicapped in research on the higher levels, I'm wondering if I should let the AI do the research and play with max civs, or stick with minimum civs and just try and do it all myself.

America-fast workers, minimum civs, get a bunch of ancient era techs
Zulu- Use the Impi to sit on all my neighbors iron, help defend horseman to help knock off my neighbors after they declare war. Scouts will help establish fast contact.
China- Fast workers, cheap barracks, perfect for warmongering with my neighbors while being nice to the far away civs to buy techs from them. When I get chivalry, the riders will rule the world.
Egypt - Fast workers, can build a ton of war chariots to upgrade to knights.
Iroquis - Mounted warrior would be a better ancient unit to attack before knights.

Wow, that's actually really great advice wohmongarinf00l. To tell the truth I've actually avoided the strategy section as I've been trying to learn stuff for myself, but I'll let that slip through. ;)

But, it doesn't matter as I finished off the game before I saw your post.
I figured I wouldn't get a place in the HOF and just finished off my spaceship, so as to leave the "winning the game bonus" high-ish.

I got around 6,300 points. Which beat my previous top score by 3,000 points.

I'm off to download v1.29 now, and then I'm going for the civ3 Deity challenge.
:)

Baleog,
You should search for SirPleb's DateScoreCalc thingy. It's in utilities I think. It will let you know if playing to 2050 or winning now will give a higher score, but it doesn't take into account an increase in territory/happiness/pop. I also use Mapstat and Apollo.

Finally finished my Emperor game. It took a month! After China's 1950 sneak attack and peace 8 yrs later, it was back to war cause I told him to get out of my territory. oops. I had massive pollution. Massive global warming turned my territory to mostly desert, but I wound up with 17,582 points in 2050. I put it on my updated site if you wanna see (see signature below). [Btw, totally off topic, but does anybody know where I can find a free 'number of times downloaded' counter for my site?]

I'm gonna get patch 1.29 and go on to Deity level!!!
