I came across this site and I'm patiently waiting delivery of my new "old stock" Civ3 copy from ebay.

I've been away from Civ for a long time. I almost failed my first year of university in 1991 because of Civ. We used to stay up all night in residence playing this on my buddy's computer, an incredible 386! I recovered from that and graduated sum cum laude but now going to give Civ3 a try! I played a little bit of Civ2 but never had much time for it.

Goodbye career, goodbye social life and goodbye marriage? ;)

welcome to Civ3. you'll find its a lot more fun than Civ2. there are many changes so look through the manual and also through the War Academy which is on the Hompage under the Civ3 section. also buy the Conquest expansion pack so you can get all the new game features and multiplayer. don't bother buying PTW because it is included in the Conquest expansion pack.

Ahoy Mikus11! :wavey:

Myself when I get a new game I just try to dive into it and only skim the manual whenever I get stumped on something. But Civ3, and then PTW (expansion) manuals I read cover to cover :coffee:

conquests is definitely better than vanilla. it has so many more units and civs and it adds more depth to the game, like adding new features to old stuff. you'll also find that civ3 took away alot from civ2. it takes time to get used to, but htey also added lots of stuff. enjoy!

Welcome to CFC. :wavey:

civ 3 is 100% better then civ2. the graphics are incredible. like in civ2 the units have a letter showing if they are fortified or whatever. with civ3 either vanallia or conquests you see the units do stuff. also everything is better like the advisors and foreign heads. the actuall map is way better. the only worse part is that when you build a wonder, it just shows its picture, unlike civ2's movie. but in the end civ3 is much better.

Welcome to CFC :goodjob:

Either is a long way from the original square tiles of Civilizations. Graphics are nice but I'm most excited about the gameplay. I'll keep my eyes open for a cheap copy of conquests.

it's good, but in some ways irritating. i certainly don't find it has the same horrible addictiveness of civ 1, but that's perhaps a good thing if you appreciate things like sleep and social life. trade is fairly different. i didn't play civ 2 at all so i don't know what the intermediate step was, but there is no caravans anymore (:() however the method of trading resources is actually quite good. might want to turn off culture flipping though because it can be a bit of a nuisance, especially to start with.

Hi Mikus11 and welcome to fellow civfanatics. General Surgeon's Warning: "Be very careful, Civ3 is highly addictive". It's a VERY strong drug for people who love thinking. I had to quit playing back at uni as well.

Suma cum laude on what major may I ask ? ;)

Chemistry - gunpowder before Christ was always a Civ goal of mine!

Civ2 did have caravans - it seems to be a much more linear copy of the original than Civ3. It seems the addition of limited strategic resources rather than caravans might give you a real-life scenario leading to war.

Chemistry? Yikes, I used to find that one hard, specially the inorganic or organic chem, can't remember now

You'll love the concept of luxuries and strategic resources. CivII was very good and I thoroughly enjoyed it but CivIII is even better. You can evade wars. I've seen people posting wins on Sid level on peaceful games having built no military units whatsoever, not even for garrison purposes. So you can play a game without getting involved in wars. Now there are many different ways to win and many variants to play.

Bear in mind, that when AI civs are at war with each other, they raze cities or capture them, leaving empty spaces of no man's land for you to plop a settler. They won't declare war at you for that. So by means of doing this or setting colonies up on the resources they can be yours without a bloodshed. You can always trade for them, of course. You'll find every CivIII game different yet the same. It takes some time, a few games to get used to the changes from CivII, but you'll love it. :)

so look through the manual

Uhm, no!
The manual is useful for lighting a fire, imho.
This site is far more informative!
