Civ4 1.61 unloads at Init Engine

Hi.

Civ4 1.52 worked great.

I just installed the 1.61 patch.

However, as the game is starting up, and the display shows Init this and that, when it starts on Init Engine my screen goes blank, and then a short time later the screen returns as the Windows desktop and Civ4 is nowhere to be seen.

Of course I then tried a clean install to 1.61, but the same problem happened again.

Any advice?
