Civ4 PitBoss Available

Hi,

I'd like to report a possible bug:

I run Pitboss and Civ out of the same directory. (I've only got the one machine so no dedicated server).

When Pitboss is running and I start up Civ IV, I am presented with this alert at the main menu:

"You have selected an unusable voice capture device. Voice capture disabled."

Interestingly, three identical alert boxes appear on top of each other. The rest of the game works as normal.

I'm running on Win2K. The RealTek sound manager provides the following details about my sound environment:
Audio driver version: 5.10.0.5750
DirectX: 9.0c
Audio Controller: INTEL(ICH5)
Audio Codec: ALC850

This issue doesn't actually reduce my playing experience as I don't use the voice capture facility. However, it is slightly annoying :mischief:

Andy

PS. Sorry if this is a known issue.

On the sound I would look at the options in civ4 and see if it thinks you are supposed to have a mic or something.

This is what I get.

Two things to add.

AI have found myself wanting a Auto Save feture that works off a timmer and/or the number of years passed.

Along with that the ability to edit players (human and AI) and their setting.

Is there a way to edit the map at all before and durring play.

Is there *any* news regarding progress towards the next release of the PiTBoSs?

Will it be synchronised with the next patch? If so, what's the planned release date for that?

Andy

A reproducable problem for me is If I use the timmer then I can set a pass to play the first turn but cant get back in.

I will try without the timmer and see if it has the same effect.

Worked fine without the timmer.

Anothe minor pain is that after entering the Game Pass I have to click on the Login button instead of just hitting the enter Key.

Tab+Enter :p

I wish it saved the last couple direct connections you've made. Not the passwords, just the addresses. Have a pull-down menu or something, or maybe allow you to configure different connecitons (set up IP, port number, etc and save it as "Joe's Game" or something. But I'd be very happy if it just saved, say the last 5 connections.

Going anywhere near the options does cause this in a pitboss game at the moment. I guess it is saving email addresses etc all of which corrupt the password.

I'm not sure it's only Pitboss corrupting these things. I've changed my password in a PbEM game and had it completely lose the plot. Had to go back a move to before the password was changed.

I haven't read through the whole thread so someone else may have already posted this, but I think I have the solution to the problem where pitboss crashes if you play the game on the same machine as you're serving it from. I figured the problem was probably that both pitboss and the game were having some kind of conflict over the game files, so I simply made a redundant copy of the whole Civ 4 folder which I run Pitboss from, then play the game from my normal folder. I did a quick test and it seemed to work, but I haven't tested it extensively.

Post here if it works for you.

In addition to what I said above, it seems you need to run the Pitboss copy with a non cracked version of the game (yes I own the game before you ask, I just hate CDs), however Pitboss doesn't need a CD anyway so it's not a problem.

Mods: feel free to delete this post if discussion of cracks is taboo.

EDIT: still crashing :(, although it took longer this time.

I've not experienced a crash with pitboss (yet) whether running it from a server or my PC. What form does the crash take and when does it occur - at start/when joining etc? If you turn logging on in the .ini file in the civ4 directory then it creates a whole load of log files which are reasonably understandable to read.

On the no cd front after much searching I believe I have finally found an answer and it still keeps on the legal side.

Basically it uses your legitamate cd to create a mini image authroised to your pc approx 1mb in size which then takes away the need for a cd. I just tryed it on Saturday. Absolutely what I was looking for. 30 day trial allows you to check it out no strings :)

I have a small thread here

Which is possibly a more appropriate forum.

Well I have the program minimized when it crashes, and am unable to bring it back up. It happens even if no one joins the game, usually takes half an hour to an hour to happen. Happens on both my laptop and my PC.

I'll try some other things, including the log idea you mentioned, and post here if I have anything new to add, thanks.

Would it possible for a 'dedicated server' download to be made available, containing just the files required to run a pitboss server? Makes it a bit easier to install and run on a server not necessarily near you (or equipped with a CD drive).

In addition, a web interface to manage it would be very well received!

I'll ask the dev's if this could be possible for people to have a D/L even if they don't have the game installed just to be a pitboss host.

Cheers - it's something I use a lot with the UT2004 servers I host, and would make rolling out Civ4 instances a bit easier.

Can it also be asked to make it possible to have more than one instance on a server at a time? I would like to use one server in my datacentre to hold all the PB games I have running.

Out of interest you can install the game for pitboss from a shared drive as it doesn't require CD verification to work. Then in the assets directory I deleted the art and sounds directory and pitboss appears to work. This reduces the footprint to 500MB. I am sure yet more space can be found.

You have to have a seperate civ 4 directory for each instance. In the .ini file change the port so each game is on a different port. Joiners can join by

Code:
ipaddress:port

Hope that makes sense, if you delete the art and sounds directory above it becomes more feasible. You may like to post in the pitboss notifier thread whether Smee can amend his app to handle multiple runnings.

You dont need a seperate civ4 directory for each instance...
What you do is this.. make an empty dir for each instance... then make a shortcut to pitboss.exe somewhere.

Rightclick the shortcut, select properties...
In the target window there could be something like:

c:\(installpath)\pitboss.exe

if the new empty dir you made was c:\pitboss1, then change the target to be:

c:\(installpath)\pitboss.exe /ALTROOT=c:\pitboss1

now run pitposs from this shortcut, and it should create some files inside the dir you made.. among other things a new civilization4.ini file

shutdown pitposs again, and edit this new ini file so it has a unique port...

Do this for each instance of pitposs you want to run, and you can run as many poitbosses you want without installing more than once
