Civ4 PitBoss Available

hey groovers, i'm posting on behalf of great scott.. he got banned for a day trying to get people to join realpolitik (wierd).

heres his post...

"CPU usage I can handle... but bandwidth is worrying me. My partner and I use an average of 8mb per day uploads, and 60mb downloads.

Since I've started running PTBS 24/7, my usage has gone to about 600mb per day upload, and 70mb download..

Which pretty much means PTBS for me is taking up 592mb of UPLOADING!, and about 10mb for DOWNLOADING! Is this right? Or did i happen to be hacked the day I launched my PTBS app?"

I am trying to connect as a player to a pitboss game set by a friend of mine. I get these two messages, then it crash to the desktop.

Both have 1.52f clean, no mods :(

I have solved my problem (incompatible versions) :)
If anyone is interested, my friend was running pitboss on a NTFS drive.
I was running my copy in a FAT32 hard drive.

Changed the system to NTFS ("convert c:/fs:ntfs") and everything goes fine! :band:

It seems that system volume is involved in the comparison between versions.

Seriously, is anyone else having this same issue? I save and re-load PTBS, (I run zone alarm) and my system is quiet.

I always have a welcome message, so i see who's logged in. Sometimes people log in, log out.. and the connection is quiet.

However, at other times, I come back, so see the red bar (upload data) constantly peaking... i engage internet & BAM! About 5 messages come up per 15 seconds, Civilisation IV is trying to send information to an IP address (it varies, but in a single session is always the same one) and is blocked by my lock.

Even when is disengage the internet lock, the red bar just resumes peaking.

What is going on here? No-one is logged into my PTBS game, but Civ IV is sending info EN MASSE to IP addresses which I only presume is the IP address of the last person who logged in! This is rediculous.. i only have the 2056 UDP open...

Some help here please... I'm running Realpolitik, which is a 32 player (yes 32) democracy-style game and it's killing me to see 600MB (YES SIX HUNDRED) megabytes of data uploaded!

Since I rebooted my PC last night, which we then has an online session with the pitboss for a couple of hours then leading to it's normal session the server has received 416K packets and sent 384K packets. Whilst I look at it at the moment that figure is staying static so I would have to say on my side it looks fine.

Anyone notice a problem with it skipping free tech on first completion of Liberalism? I had astronomy queued up in our 8 person/2AI game and it logged me as getting it first but didn't actually reward me. Swore this happened with music too but didn't notice the log.

Additionally, could someone post the contents of a PitBoss server email? We can't get it to work and I'd like to see if there is a quicker way to get into the Direct IP games other than loading and browsing the menus all the time when there is a turn up (does it give you a link to click or anything?).

email turn notifier works for me just fine with v1.52.. and i'm emailing out to 31 other players...

P.S. As for my uploading problem... well, at least I've discovered my ISP gives me a 5GB download, unlimited upload (!!!) limit..

P.S.S. You PTBS junkies really should check out Civ4 REALPOLITIK sometime.

That 'protected' message comes up when you try to re-open a game that has the 'no cheat' option enabled... and ANY change has been made to particular files in your Civ4 folder.

However, the 'no cheat' option is a pain. With the 2nd patch I began some new games which I'd mod using a tech modifier to drag out the game. However, when i had to revert to vanilla settings for an ongoing PBEM game.. i just kept the vanilla and modded version of the Civ4 Tech Infos XML file, so i'd use that backup to replace the existing one.

However, when I went back to my old game, while I'd recopied the modded file as Civ4TechInfos, it didn't look at that, it merely looked at the fact that the file had been modified recently.

Suffice to say, I could never play another turn of that game. My advise, just put faith in your fellow humans and disregard the no cheat option until someone can come up with a REAL no cheat checker that will actually verify the contents of your data and xml files... instead of just checking the timestamps.

Ok, before I post I apologize for being moronic! :wallbash:

Is there something like a manual and/or instructions on how to set up the Pitboss correctly for this or that configuration? And how about a summary for all the options the PitBoss offers and how to use them. :help:

I know that a lot gets answered here, when searching through the thread, but its 16 (?) pages already and I have trouble separating the important info for just using the PitBoss...

No manual and tbh a lot of it is self explanatory - start it up and then ask the questions :)

Pitboss Firewall/Connection bug - port 2056:

My friend has a pitboss game going on a server at his house, everything working fine.

I decided to setup a pitboss server at my house. I opened port 2056 in my router/firewall, set things up and everything worked fine. A couple friends of mine connected no problem.

Next morning, from my house, I tried to connect to my friend's pitboss server to take my turn. I couldn't connect to host (which has never happened to me before).

So I went into my firewall and closed port 2056 (which i'd opened to setup my own server) and tried to connect to my friend again. Now it worked.

So it seems you can not connet to another server if you open port 2056. Anyone else experience or try this? and is there a workaround? (besides opening and closing ports all the time).

Sounds like a bug in the router or that it is incorrectly set up. If it is running NAT then it should only re-route packets addressed to it. If the firewall part is intercepting all packets then you need to learn how to configure the seperate interfaces (internal & external) for the firewall.

In any case packet routing is nothing to do with Pitboss.

One workaround would be for you and your friend to agree to use different port numbers.

One other thing to say is that it is not PB. When I make a PB game the first round goes fine but no one can log into the second.

By kicking them they are then able to login as new players and then no problem.

This makes me think it is the Multi part of Civ that is not working correctly.

Don't think my router has a bug. After thinking about it (instead of panic-ing) I think the problem is the conflict with port 2056.

My friend's server communicates w/my laptop (my Civ4 client) on port 2056 and my desktop (server) is listening on port 2056. So when my friend's server sends packets to me on port 2056 my router doesn't know who to send them to; my laptop or my server (because both are listening on port 2056).

Is that logic sound?

I think the dif port number is probably the easiest workaround (instead of opening/closing port 2056 all the time). I could set my server to port 2057. The only issue will be that when i play turns in my friend's game my client (laptop) will have to use 2056. When i play turns on MY server I'll need to change my laptop to use 2057. Yuk.

Any other ideas?

RegentMan and myself are organizing a 5 team MP competition (see annoucement), and are leaning towards using PBEM, however, there's a bit of interest in PitBoss too. Do you guys know if it is possible to switch from PBEM -> PitBoss and back to PBEM easily? Is it worth using PitBoss?

You might want to wait until the next patch comes out. The intent was always that all MP saves can be loaded in other MP formats but there's a bug limiting that in 1.52.

Scree,

Once again, excellent program.

I have a request for one small addition.

Would it be possible to indicate who has run his turn for the year by putting a little star next to the person's name on the main Pitboss screen (where the the Chat Dialogue is and all)? Then, at a glance, the host can see who has finished their turn. Additonally, maybe even a little message next to the person's name, such as "2 turns ago."

Thanks,

Alanb
