Civ4 PitBoss Available

Ok, sorry, I think I misunderstood. You have one computer that runs pitboss, which is also the one you play from, correct.

If players can't connect, there's a good chance that port forwarding is not enabled, or is fowarding to the wrong IP address. Check your fowarding settings. They should be something like this:

Name: A nickname for the line, Civ4 or something similiar so you can remember why you foward something 2-3 months down the road.
Port: 2056 (should match the port in your Civ4.ini) It's probably a range value, so it could be 2056-2056, or 2050-2060.
IP: The IP of your computer (not your Internet IP). This is probably like 191.168.1.x.
Enabled: Probably a checkbox or something. If it's not enabled, it's not going to be working.

Go ahead and double check those settings and let us know.

Yeah, Port Forwarding is on (again, it was working before this Mac Cloning thing turned on), and I have it set for 2050-2060.

I did ipconfig and double-checked what my internal IP was and made sure it's correct, and it is.

Still, no one can connect. Should I turn on "port triggering"?

You shouldn't need port triggering. Can you post a screenshot of what your port forwarding screen looks like?

And FYI - the MAC cloning thing works like this:
Every device in the world that has a network connection has a unique "MAC Address" that identifies it. Your ISP configured your internet connection to only work from to a certain MAC address, I assume to prevent people from stealing your Internet connection at a different location. The MAC cloning feature that most routers has allows you to change your router's MAC address to match that MAC address they are providing service to.

Also, did you double check since turning this Cloning feature on that your external IP address has not been changing? (www.whatismyip.com)

Apologies in advance since I suspect these have been asked before, but I couldn’t wade through all 422 posts …

If setting-up a PitBoss game,

1. Can the PitBoss server be on a different machine than the one the host is playing on (assuming Civ is installed on both)? In other words, with one play disk and two machines can I set-up one as the PitBoss server and one as the ‘play’ machine, or does this require two CDs?

2. What are the minimum and recommended requirements for a separate PitBoss server machine? Does it need to match those of the game itself? I assume it doesn’t have to have any rigorous video requirements, but how about CPU/RAM?

Thanks for any help.

I have the opposite question/observation. And also sorry for coming to the thread late.

I noticed people earlier in the thread saying that if the server and a client are both behind the same NAT, you need to have one of the two use a port that is different than the default.

What I can report is that I have client and server behind a NAT firewall and played 4 additional clients that were outside the firewall. We all played simultaneously for hours without having to muck with the default port settings on the client machine.

But this is what is different: the pitboss server and the client were running on the same machine. Didn't seem to be any port forwarding problems in that case. :crazyeye:

I suppose if it was a huge terra map, having pitboss and client on the same machine might be a problem. But my machine seems to handle it fine with large maps well enough.

The situation you are talking about i beleive works because the port problem is bypassed by some weird way.

I too can play CIV on comp X and run a PB on X at the same time.

I am running my server and my client behind the same NAT on DIFFERENT computers, and my players and I have no problems connecting together.

And I have not set a different port for my server or my client.

I have no idea why it works for us, because so many people report problems...

I have just set up a seperate PTBS server on a older computer behind my router. I have read every post on this thread and haven't seem anybody with the issues that I am having. Basically when I go to log into the PTBS server from another computer behind my router, I am going to the local LAN IP Address, but the error message I am recieving is this,"The version of our critical game files does not match the host, you can not join."

I am running Warlords on my client and the PTBS server. Is there something in the INI files that may be pointing the PTBS at the older Civ4 game and not the Warlords?

I have tried to load the older Civ4 game on my client and log into the PTBS, but I get the same error. I know that I am connecting as if I try without a password, it says I haven't entered the correct password, when I enter the right password, it gives me the error above again. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chad

There is a problem with the Warlords version of Pitboss. There is a thread further down this page that has a fix for it.

well, it's not wierd. It makes sense.

I did have to go inside the router and make sure the port is forwarded to the machine I am using. but since server and client are both on the same machine I don't have to worry about the fact that forwarding to one machine means that the other machine won't see the messages on on that port.

Has someone tried to run PitBoss on a Linux box?

Does someone know whether it is possible to initialize the game via the command line, and to force PitBoss to be more verbose about the game status (ie. players connected, victory conditions reached etc. )?

I get an error saying "This application has failed to start because boost_python-vc71-mt-1_32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem" what does this error mean? Do I really have to reinstall Civ4? I allready tried downloading it again.

Are you running Pitboss from your Civ 4 directory in Program Files? It should be in the same place as the Civ 4 executable.

I have one more question. In the wizard when you select internet and then it asks for a Username and Password, what Username and Password are they asking for?

Ok, I downloaded the Warloads fixed version and it works fine....I just have one problem... When I`m setting up a new game and I have inputed the game name and password...it takes me to a setup screen with no civ choices. Everything else is there.... When I launch the game it setups 9 random civs. I have no menu to choose which civs I want or how many in the game.

I launched an ip game and joined it np. I was online with a guy who recently started hosting one, and he said those civs chioces should be there in the same screen as the game options.

I noticed that when it launches..that box that shows it intialising has a line that says this... "Init Progress - 5/9 - Init Python `import site failed`;use -v for traceback"....so any idea`s ?. Thx

Ok Canuch Soldier helped me out. My video compression was to low......the civ choices were being cut off, (bottom of menu). Just bumped up my compression and now i can seee it.... :). Thx

I have a few questions about Pitboss and Warlords-Pitboss.

  1. Was the email issue ever fixed in Pitboss?
  2. Does email work in the Warlords-Pitboss?
  3. Why does the Warlords-Pitboss have a lower version number than the Pitboss version for the base game released three months earlier?
  4. Is there any documentation about the use of Pitboss?

That should do it for now.

Thanks in advance for any helpful responses.

1. Yes
2. Yes, it works most of the time...just got one from one of the games I`m in. The host has to enter his smtp sever address to enable the game to send out end of turn e-mail notifications.
3. We are using a Pitboss Warlords fixed version,(warlords_pitboss_fixed_v200). Works well I just dl`ed it. It must be extracted into the root Warlords directory.
4 Yes,several posts spread through different forums and threads...:). Here is one....actually it is a post of the readme that comes with the pitboss file.

http://civ4players.proboards44.com/index.cgi?board=pspga&action=display&thread=1144988772

I`ve downloaded and tested the pitboss.......will be hosting a game soon...:)

Also, for tracking pitboss games your in or hosting...nothing beats this site....

http://www.civstats.com/beta/allgames.php

I`m currently playing in 5 pitboss games. Started in one...subed into 4 others, before 1 AD. There are a few games currently looking for subs.
