Civ5 crashes I click the Load Game button on Single player menu

Civ 5 is consistently crashing on me when I click the Load Game button on the Single player menu.

This crash is different than the loading saved games created before 1.0.0.621 since I am not actually selecting a game. Crashes before that! I never get the dialog to select any a saved game since Civ5 crashes on my before that --- quite literally after clicking the button.

New games work. Saving seems to work. Even the Credits and Options work. The crash seems to only happen when I click the Load Game button on the menu.

Any ideas or workarounds?

Here is what I have tried with crashes each time.
  1. Run under Direct11. Crash.
  2. Reboot. Run under DirectX11. Crash.
  3. Run under DirectX9. Crash.
  4. Defrag cache via Steam. Then run under DirectX11. Crash.
  5. Use Steam to "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". Says 1 file was not cool and redownloaded. Then I rebooted. Ran under DirectX11. Crash.
  6. Use steam to back up all saved games. Then manually delete all games under the below directories, then run under DirectX11. Crash.

  7. c:\users\<me>\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single\
    c:\users\<me>\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single\auto\
    c:\users\<me>\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\single\quick\
  8. Using Steam, Delete Local Content. Reboot. Reinstall Civ5. Reboot. Run Civ5 under DirectX11. Crash.
  9. Ran Windows Update. Nothing.

Prior to yesterday, I had no problems running Civ5 Deluxe (purchased via Steam for the Babylonians).

System is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.
NVidia GT 220 1GB Ram
Core2 Duo 1.86
2GB RAM

Civ5 info:
  • Version 1.0.0.621 (Deluxe purchased via Steam for Babylonians)

Steam info:
  • Built Nov 3 2010, at 14:20:13
  • Steam API: v010
  • Steam Package versions: 1411 / 1411

Thanks in advance for any help folks can offer.

Cheers.

Hey

I have the same problem. As soon as I try to reload any game it crashes and I receive a runtime error. Until yesterday I never had problems.

I updated every single driver and check and tried all possible setting configurations ingame but it did not work out.

I would really appreciate any help because this makes the game almost unplayable...:(:(

That's a weird one. Sounds like you've done all the reasonably obvious stuff. Reinstall?

I did and no luck. To uninstall and then reinstall, I specifically did this:
  1. Launch Steam
  2. Select Civ 5 and then Delete Local Content.
  3. Reboot.
  4. Verified Civ5 no longer (via shortcuts or Steam menus. Steam also shows Civ5 as installable.
  5. Using Steam, select Install for Civ5.
  6. Wait a few hours (my Internet connection is not the best) while the game installs
  7. Verify Download is complete.
  8. Clean shutdown of Steam.
  9. Clean shutdown of my PC and then reboot.
  10. Run Civ5 under DirectX11.
  11. Crash.

@XelmatZe

Do you get the Load Game dialog where you can select which game to load? Or crash before you get that popup dialog?

  • I crash immediately after clicking the Load Game button on the Single player menu, never getting that pop-up dialog to load a game.
  • If you get the pop-up dialog and crash AFTER selecting a file, there is a known bug/regression for Civ5 Deluxe gamers introduced in 1.0.0.621 where loading games saved under version < 1.0.0.621 will crash after selecting them to load/play when running version >= 1.0.0.621. The only work-around I can tell is to start and save a new game. That blew since I lost a 400-turn game that was rendered unplayable. Anyhoo, new games worked fine for me until yesterday.

Also, what are your specs?
  • What version of Civ5? Retail? Steam? Deluxe via Steam?
  • What version of Steam?
  • O/S?
  • Hardware details?

If you (or anyone else) discover a fix or a work-around, please let me know!

24 hours without Civ5 and I am already suffering withdrawals! I might have to start a new Civ4 BTS game instead...

My OS is Windows 7 Mobile Edition 32 bit. I already updated every driver and checked it out again. My version of Civ 5 is retail deluxe (hope this is the right description, it is the one with the small figures :D).

I can choose the button from the main single player menu but then the game crashed after I selected a particular savegame and pressed the load button.

But I am not talking about the regular single player menu. I always use the mod menu. I already discovered that certain mods may cause this error. I uninstalled all of them except one and it worked again. But anyway, this is not acceptable as imo a lot of mods are needed to have a good game...

Head to Nvidia and download latest GFX driver. Windows Update decided to install some dodgy drivers for my card and then Civ refused to load, even after reinstalling and deleting game cache, etc.

Also, make sure you've deleted the game cache, as this doesn't get deleted with uninstall IIRC.

Isn't this the same bug as mentioned here?

@Hyronymus

For me, the Original Poster, definitely not.

Civ5 crashes when I click the Load Game button from the Single player menu.

In the bug you linked too, the crash occurs when someone clicks the Load Game button, gets the Open File dialog, selects a saved game saved prior to 1.0.0.621 then clicks load (when running Civ5 >= 1.0.0.621). I unfortunately understand this bug very well since it invalidated a 400+ turn game I was in the middle of. *sigh*

I never get the dialog to select a game as Civ5 crashes before that post.

@CurseUppl

I didn't try manually deleting everything under the \My Games\Side Meier's Civilization 5\ directory after I did the uninstall, so I'll try that tonight and reinstall and hope for the best.

I am fairly confident that I have neither done video driver updates nor DirectX updates in the last week *and* Civ5 worked 2 days ago. My WU are set to manual not automatic and I review them before opting to do. I did verify that I had no "new" restore points in the last couple days.

Hyronymus,

it seems to be the same bug as mentioned there, in my case.

I opened a new game, saved it immediately or after a couple of turns and tried to load it again -> Crash

Looks like this is a major problem and not in relation to any version conflict. Last week Friday, I did not have that prob ...

Shaka, have you tried starting a new game, then loading your saved game from within that? Longshot, but it could make a difference.

The only other thing that comes to mind is Windows registry corruption of some sort.

I'm fairly positive we suffer from the same error, ShakaRob. My savegame is from patch 1.00.621 too and yet won't load. I have the idea their hotfix patch is rather untested.

@Perkus

Playing a new game works fine, which is just baffling. Even saving that new game, whether on first turn or turn 200, appears to be fine as the Save dialog appears I can do stuff (save locally, save to the Steam cloud, etc.). As far as I can tell all menus and buttons work as expected except...

...when I click the Load Game button from the Single player menu which generated 25 crashes for yesterday, despite doing all the steps I noted in the original post.

Tonight when I get home from work I try CurseUppl's suggestion and see if that helps. Whether successful or not, I'll post the result.

One final caveat I have not mentioned --- I have NO mods loaded. I want to get through at least one game on each level to prove to myself that I understand the nuances before I start playing the modded tweaks.

I just noticed someone posted an elaborate fix to the problem on the 2K board:

http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/member.php?u=130782
I'm having the same problem with windows7 64bit and fixed it.
In my case,
1.Installed windows xp to another disk.
2.Open steam app on windows xp from windows 7 installed location .
3.Play Civilization V and exit without save.
4.Return to windows 7
5.Open steam app on windows 7 and run Civilization V.

I don't know why fixed problem.

#easybcd is very usefull for multiboot windows xp and windows 7.
I don't know what game version he's running but perhaps someone can try this approach and post the result?

Can it be that by installing Windows XP some tweaks were made to W7?

BTW: cleaning the cache in W7 does NOT solve this problem.

@ShakaRob,

Yes, you should definitely update your video drivers if necessary. If that doesn't help, try any or all of the following:

1. If running in Fullscreen mode, switch to running in a window, or vice versa.
2. In the Video Options menu, force the game to run at a lower resolution, and/or lower other video settings.

Also, please post your DxDiag file if updating video driver doesn't help.

Thanks!

For reasons I do not understand, Civ5 tonight now appears to work fine.

I made no changes since the re-install, reboot and re-launch under DirectX11 (and ultimately crash) last night.

Weird. 2 days ago worked. Yesterday 25+ crashes (even after reboots!). Today everything is duckies and bunnies. Hopefully tomorrow things continue to be dine.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions.

No luck for me yet, even after installing the newest nVidia drivers.

Not sure if you've ever fixed it, but I've been having the same problem for over a year now. Best I can manage is to start steam in Offline mode and the load box appears without any issues.
