CivAssist II

CivAssist II 30-Oct-2016

1. City rank: In the CivAssist city tab, the column to the far right. The ranks that are given to my cities there makes no sense to me, I don't understand it. Is it wrong?

2. Updating game info: I believe I one or two times had to restart not only CivAssist, but also the game itself (or perhaps I was too inpatient. It's a while ago and I'm not so sure anymore as the memory fades). Usually I just ignore CivAssist if it's out of sync, it will normally be synchronized the next turn.

4. Okay, a save I will post.

5. The column widths: It does store some of it. But in some circumstances it does not. See screenshots 1 and 2 below. The first picture shows the stored setting. The second picture is how I adjust it to help they eyes. I think it's easier to read the information when the columns are closer. Now there is a "blank space" on the right side, and CivAssist will not store it this way. Quite often it forgets my settings in one or more tabs after playing just a minute. I guess it's because it's stored in RAM only and because I "only" got 320 RAM it will often fall out of the RAM.
This isn't a big issue, I don't know if you will do something about it. Maybe an empty column would work as a buffer to "fill in" the empty space.

7. More intelligence features: I see only the first of the problems you mention. This information would not be a spoiler IMO. The game designers left it out, but I think they either forgot it or simply didn't bother. I can't see how this would hurt. It would add a little bit of realism. In real world intelligence is not always accurate, and so should it be in Civilization. Blunders do happen sometimes. And sometimes huge scandals like the surprising Yom-Kippur war, 1973.
.... But I do now see one more problem and maybe it was this one you had in mind: It would be unfair to them without CA II.

I do now recall something.
Something was not right in CivAssist, it was about Miniaturization. Greece had this tech and CivAssist said they did not have it. Restarting CivAssist did not help this, I helped to restart both the game and CivAssist. Maybe I rebooted too, I'm not sure.

Two small bugs to report:

1) if you right click on the white space to the right of the resource list in the resource locator, an exception is generated. It is possible to recover.

2) If you bring up the Open File dialog, it is not possible to access the Alerts window. This is annoying because the Window is liable to be on top of the dialog box. The simplest and best solution, IMO, would be to put the dialog box on top.

Any chance it can be set up to detect Civ running across a network? By say, a small program running on the Civ-playing machine that allows the other computer to see Civ running? Or by monitoring a directory?

As has been said before, this is a great tool.

I have a question - this may not be the right place - but is it possible to glean what tech was researched first and by whom from the save file? Does the game save that at all?

Very helpful utility.

I have one request. Unless I missed it, can the program tell me when each rival civ began a certain wonder? If I micromanage, I can record this from the messages, so it is not a cheat, and it is helpful when in a wonder race. I realize you wouldn't know exactly when a wonder will be built, but you at least would know how many civs are competing, and a rough estimate of your odds of getting it.

I'm almost sure CivAssist can't tell that.

Just write it down on a piece of paper. Easy. And you can spy and predict when the wonder will be done. It's not accurate but works well enough for me.

Pressing F7 in the game is helpful to see how many are building what wonder. It's useful to check now and then, it happens an AI switch to another build. Your foreign minister won't inform you if they drop a project.

CRpSuite can. I forget which program it is, I think it's Replay. It will tell you when a Civ has started a wonder. This is pretty much the same as having a diplomat/spy in the civ, and them reporting to you when it starts.

Well of course I could write it down but that is the point of Civ Assist, isn't it?

Ahhh CRpSuite. But, I get the messages that a civ has started a wonder without a using a spy, so it must not be inside knowledge.

It won't detect it running, but it will already monitor a folder across a directory - just set the "Game files path" on the options screen to the folder across the network.

@others - thaks for the comments & feedback - I'll look at the issues raised. :)

Yeah, I thought that would work, but it didn't. I had to load the files manually.

I'll try again, and see if maybe I did something wrong in setting it up.

Don't need a spy, just a diplomat/embassy.

I have just installed this for the first time and it is a very helpful utility, however i am having a few problems with it.

Everytime civassist is running, after a certain amount of time, sometimes straight away and sometimes after a long time has passed I can no longer get the main window to open and I have to ALT-CTRL-DEL to kill it and then start it up again. I cant open it with either the icon in the corner or from the Nav-bar on the Alerts window.

Also, I cant get the main window to open at all on each turn. It opens then minimises straight away and then i have to ALT-TAB to select it. I have tried different options and it just does the same. I can get it not to come up at all, I just cant get it to stay there when I want it to show.

What is the best way to use the program, as a beginner regent player, I cant always 'see' what the program is telling me, as in I dont understand the results and what actions to take. Has anyone released a how to get the best out of guide or anything similar?

Ben

A tip: Click the 'show alerts' button. It will tell you a sumary of what is happening/happened, and you dont have to leave the Civ 3 window to see the alerts.

In case you havent see that button yet.

@azzaman333

Yep, seen that. That works ok, its just if I want the main window to open every turn, or if I select a link on the alerts nav-bar it sometimes wont open the main window.

Ben

Thanks azzaman333, that seems to be stopping it so far...fingers crossed.

Do you know if there is a guide to getting the most out of civassist?
