Go here (Microsoft page for .NET 1.1 download) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en and download the file. On your computer, right click on the file, and select "Run as administrator". If you just double click the file, it will give you an error message, so you have to make sure you run as administrator. This will install the .NET 1.1 Framework. After that, you can install CivAssist II. It's what I did, and everything works fine. As for your other questions, no, I did not install the .NET 1.1 service pack. I don't have any idea why you're getting error messages like that, when I tried to install CivAssist II without .NET 1.1, it just told me that the program can't find the necessary files and it let me click a button to link to the Microsoft website. I hope this helps.

Macezek - I'll try it again. Trying to port everything over & switch to broadband @ the same time...trying to resolve lots of issues & solo care for my daughter (should have sent the 4.5 yr old to the nursing conference with my wife) is a challenge. I did some searching last night and there seems to bit a bunch of info on JIT debugger but lost patience last PM and uninstalled the whole lot and played w/o civassist to calm myself

What do you mean? If you are an administrator you run everything as administrator. And if you are not admin, you can't run nothing as admin.

I don't even get that option when I right click. I just installed by doubleclicking, no problem.

i have .NET 2.0 installed...... the installer keeps asking for 1.1.... can you just make the essential files available (e.g. executable) or make the prog open-source

.NET 2.0 and .NET 1.1 are two different things, somehow . It's not like your ordinary program where if you have a higher version, you have everything before it, so just because you have 2.0 doesn't mean you have 1.1. If the installer keeps asking you for .NET 1.1, that means you don't have it installed on your computer, or the installer can't find it. Download and install .NET 1.1 and try again.

The installer isn't the only thing that needs .NET 1.1, its the program. CivAssist II was built on the .NET 1.1 framework, so you need 1.1 installed on your computer to run CivAssist II, not just to install it.

Well, I used to have the initial version you get when you buy the disc, so I installed V2.29f. But still no luck. It does show the right version name when I start up my game, in the bottom left corner. But CivAssist won't work...

edit: Ah, now it works. I like the program, but there is one very minor problem. The button in the game that gives you access to CA II covers the first strategic resource in the strategic resource box of a city when viewing the city information screen. So now, when investigating a city with my embassy, I couldn't see how much oil the egyptians had...

If you want me to I could make a screenshot of that.

No need for a screenie. I think it does that to all of us. Most of the time you only need to know that you have at least one of anything, and you can always go to your Trade Advisor to check on how many of each if it becomes important to know how many you own. For checking embassies, you can shut the CA2 utility down, take a look, then bring it back up.

seriously?? I'm kinda scared to install 1.1 .NET.. I program in C# with 2.0 and I don't want it to mess all that up. well I guess i'll just wait for them to fix this

It shouldn't mess them up. It's two different installs. I have 2.0 and 1.1 on my home machine and there's usually no conflict. But then, I don't program C# in 2.0 either. YMMV, or course.

You can move the alerts window if you desire. I have mine placed in the upper right corner. I find it the least intrusive area to have it placed in.

Sirdanilot not refers to the alerts window, but the CAII icon in the upper left corner of the screen. As Gmaharriet said there isn't a easy solution.

Given that you program in .NET, I suggest that you should learn something about the framework. 1.1 and 2.0 coexist quite happily on the same computer. Look it up.

It is not a problem with either CA2 or the .NET framework. Vista does some hidden things with file security that are causing the problem you describe above.

Through a process of hunt and peck trial and error I was able to get CA2 started just fine under Vista, but have run into an issue with the way Vista handles the .sav files and where CA2 expects to find them, and also with a "cannot access the file" message when CA2 attempts to open an autosave.

In short, if you have more than one user on a machine (an administrator and one other) you need to install the .NET framework and CA2 from the administrator account, not the user account, and you need to check "run as administrator" in the CA2 program properties window.

If you do all that CA2 will start just fine if you have administrator privileges, but will choke on the "file access" issue. I am still trying to find the solution to that one. It has something to do with the way Vista stores the autosaves in hidden and locked directories for each user of the system.

My tentative conclusion is that so long as you have only one account on the machine you won't run into these difficulties.

I'm getting the same error message as well - can you tell me how you got yours to work? I have the regular Civ3 but have not done any upgrades to it.

Ok...Yes there are three accounts on my machine. Mine is an administration account. It is somewhat comforting to know someone else feels my pain I'm off to find that tab and see what I can do. thank you Brother Bede

If you open the C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Civ directories and you do not find a ...Conquests\Saves\Auto subdirectory you need to run C3C in "compatibility mode", another one of the choices in the Program Properties tab. If you do that it will then store all the proper files in directories that CA2 can recognize.

You may be right. I am running Vista on my machine with only one account and everything works just fine, no errors or compatability problems. Everything installed without a hitch and runs just fine. I also disabled User Account Control first thing after installing Vista, though I don't know how that would make much of a difference.

It bothers me how the same software can install differently on so many peoples machines, even though they all run the same OS.
