Civilization 5

I think some people are forgetting that Civ is a game and is not supposed to play out exactly life real life, the Russians SHOULD be able to build the Pyramids, York can become the Hindu Holy city if the English found Hinduism. Names are just semantics, its not really the English, and its not really the Russians, the inspiration for building the Pyramids is not to house the nations dead Pharaohs, people need to disconnect from reality, it is a game!

Civ 4 is great graphically and the gameplay is fine. However, modding is nowhere near as easy as in Civ 3's editor and the end game units leave a lot to be desired. No paratroopers? Still able to build ancient looking explorers in the nuclear age. Cavalry upgrading to gunships and not the more obvious tanks. Battleships that actually have regressed graphically from Civ 3. A very limited navy in fact and no cruise missiles. May Civ 5 could combine what is best in 3 and 4 and give units more realistic purposes. eg, Bombers would kill defenders as well as destroy fortifications as would happen in reality.

I think those things must be added in warlords or beyond the sword because I have cruise missiles and paratroopers.

If this is a wish list...

1. Please put again the the coastal fortress
2. Put a kind of "pagan" religion... it's hard to live without the official ones.
3. XVI century gun powder mortars (no more "medieval catapults")
4. Radar/sonar technology (improving FLAK/ASW)
5. Create "Offensive Alliances"
6. Possibility to get "slaves" (from beaten enemies) for "slave labours" (gives more hammers)
7. Mine fields (in sea and land) tiles
8. Possibility to intercept aerial transport
9. Possibility to support a Guerrilla Warfare in an enemy territory (like the CONTRA in Nicaragua)

I understand that. My point wasn't so much that the entire game be designed in this way, but that a scenario be built in this way (and with some flexibility...)
In BtS, Rhyes and Fall of Civilization was built in this way, and I was just saying that such a scenario should be packaged with Civ V along with the generic stuff that we typically get in a first release (personally, I think that the scenarios in a first release should be somewhat better quality than are typically released for such games).

I personally think that many of the elements of Civ IV were drastic improvements over previous versions of the game. However, as stated by others, modding is very difficult in Civ IV (you almost have to be a programmer to do it), though I personally would like to see more packaged modding capability than even in Civ III if possible. I guess what I'd like most is if they had the same sort of game engine and modding was done similarly to Civ IV, but they had easy to use tools that came with the game that anybody could use that allowed everybody to create complex mods.

I also think that we need to get some basic stuff in the first release, such as maps and modpacks, that will make creating a scenario far easier. I also think that the graphics needs to be toned down some to accomidate slower PCs and also to allow for the richer gaming experience (i.e. more units, larger more complex cities, more complex gameplay where needed, more realistic terrain features, etc.). I know that we all love more graphics, but I have a feeling that everything we loved in Civ III and Civ II that's missing in Civ IV is missing primarily because of the memory sapping graphics (time consuming as well).

I remember the way terrain was in SMAC, and I know this idea is a little off, but given a lot of editting, I figure there has to be a way that someone could create realistic Earth maps using something similar. Basically have certain types of base terrain, then have it be either rainy, moist, or arid, and then have different overlays (in this case, ice, jungle, or forest). If someone could figure out how to model weather patterns other than just East-West rain-shadow fashion, then I'm sure that it would work perfectly.

i think you should be able to create suburbs or something. adds 1 population and 1 culture, but adds 1 unhealthiness and 1 more bread.

Suburbs ADD culture? As if...

How about +1 Unhealthy (fat sobs never get out of their cars), +1 Unhappy (social isolation/angst/ennui/New Jersey), but +2 hammers and +2 Commerce (sprawling mini-mall construction)?

 culture as in $UV dealerships.

Suburbs

Cottages/Villages etc. removed from game

Build a farm, when there is a farm present on a site a cottage will develop with time, and if there's enough food around the cottage will eventually expand to a village. This village will provide extra commerce and production. The more developed the village or town that occupies the farm square the more commerce and production will go to the city.

While someone has noted here, or another thread - that Firaxis has always released the game w/ ~16 Civs... I do believe that would be a Mistake. Many people are used to using Huge maps and 18+ Civs. Would make far more sense for the game to have at least 24 Civs.

I for one, wont be buying a game that limits playability to the point where any 18Civ game you play would always have the same Civs on the map, and prevents you from playing more than 18 Civs out of the box. The game shouldn't have to be modded from the get-go.

Just because thats how the game has been released in the past, doesn't mean it should continue that trend.

Germany - Frederick, Hitler

I disagree with your choices for German leaderheads. Bismarck should definately be one of the leaders, as he was the main player in uniting the German nation.

My computer is too tragically crap for anything more then a 9 Civilsation game

@Acal, I've been involved in some of the other TechThreads here (debates on Processor/upgrades etc). My PC is now just over 3 years old:
  • AMD Athlon 64 2800 (1.8GZ, Run @ 32bit under Win2K)
  • 2 Gigs of RAM
  • Nvidia 7600 GT, 256Meg - upgraded ~a year ago when my ATI 9800Pro crapped out.
I run Huge maps without any significant slowdown, I completed a 11 Civ/Huge, I'm over halfway thru 18Civ/Huge - hopefully it wont crap out before the end!

I plan to upgrade the internals of my box this year, AMD TriCore or Intel Dual + 4Gigs of Ram; and make the 64bit OS switch then. Including a $150-200 GPU will prolly be around $500-$600 - Though I may need to get a new monitor as well, this piece-oh-crap Acer 22" has a halfdozen or more "burnt out" pixels now, and it suffered from corner/edge whitewash bleeding from the beginning - which didn't bother me. But these white pixels on a black background ugh. I'll never buy an Acer monitor again, samsung to the rescue!

I have 512MB of RAM its why its so tragic, I play 9 player default maps because anymore and it doesn't work. I also can never trade for world maps because it slows down sooo much. But thankfully I should be getting a new computer in 2 months tops

I would agree, my choices would be Hitler and Bismark, Barbarossa (aka Frederick) would be Holy Roman.
