I have looked through the forum as best I can but cannot seem to find a thread that answers my specific problem so my apologies upfront for asking this question and if it has been repeated before !!

I cannot get Civ II TOT to run on my Dell PC which runs a 32 bit version of Windows XP.

I've installed the programme from a genuine disc (not a copy of an original but the original disc that runs fine on an old Windows 98 PC I have) and all goes well, press the launch button and the loading screen comes up and then nothing.

If anybody out there can I help I would really appreciate it.

Having XP and an old PC may give you a clue as to my proficiency with computers but I really love this version of Civ. I don't like the others and would really like to persist with this one !!

Thanks in anticipation of your help,

The only thing that comes to mind is if you are using more than one log on. It will not load on a restricted log on. It can only be loaded with full admin rights. You can play it on a restricted log on though once it is loaded. You might also check your pop up and virus protection software to see if they are blocking the setup file from running.

Hi timtofly.

Thanks for posting a reply.

I've checked all of these things and they are annoyingly O.K. !!

I play ToT on my laptop, with Windows XP. Aside from occasional mysterious crashes, it runs fine.

It's wonderful to find another person who enjoys ToT - it's my favorite, too! :goodjob:

Try running in compatibility mode for 98. It works in vista laptops. (Personally on my desktop I've had no problems)

I think I had this problem a while back. Go into properties and select compatability mode. I know that change has allowed a number of old games to work on my XP laptop and I'm fairly sure that Civ II: Test of Time was one of them.
