Civilization II ToT sound formats

Just one question, I'm trying to create some new sound files for my Reformation scenario.
Is it true, that ToT only accept 8 bit Mono, 22050 hz, PCM *.wav files?

I've a sound file in WAV format which I converted to 8 bit Mono and now it sounds a little bit creepy, like an old record on tape from the 80s, 90s.

Ok, I know, it's a game from the 90s, so I can't maybe expect some better sound quality.:mischief:
