hi everyone!!

i have purchased civilization IV a few days ago and i started playing it. i think it is an awesome game!! i have done all the tutorials and i dont really understand the gameplay:confused: i want to play online but i know i will be a pathetic opponent. i dont understand how the city population grows from 1 to 2 and how to make a religion e.g buddhism your national religion.

thanks david!

In order to grow your population you will need a worker for your city. After you've got the worker, put him to working improving the area around your city (within the cultural boundary)....build a couple of cottages, a farm, mines in the hills.

I always produce one worker per city, and I have one doing nothing but building interconnecting roads. That strategy seems to work.

You get your religion by researching a specific tech. I forget how it goes, but Philosophy is one, Civil Service another, Theocracy gives you Christianity, I forget what gives you Islam. :blush:

Population grows each time you fill the population growth bar in the top of the city screen. This is done by generating surplus food. Actually you don't particularly need a worker for this, but farms help generating surplus.

To make a religion your state religion it needs to be present in your empire. This means founding it by being the first to reach a certain tech, or have someone else's religion spread to you, this happens automatically. If you have a religion in your city consult the religion adivsor by pressing his button in the top right of the screen.

As a general tip: Just fool around on the lowest difficulty level, with the manual in hand. Also try to consult the civilopedia often; it contains a lot of info.

does it matter how big your population in your city is? and tyranusbonehead why do u need to build interconnecting roads?

If the amount of food produced by a city exceeds the amount of food consumed by its population (and you haven't turned on the Turn Off Population Growth control for the city), eventually the population increases by one. On the city view (double click on the city), there's a bar at the top showing how many turns before that happens. (If the city is training a settler or worker, however, all population growth stops until that has finished.)

To make a religion your state religion, you must first have that religion established in one of your cities. This can happen by your founding the religion (by being the first to develop the associated civ), or by a missionary (yours or someone else's) coming to the city and converting the populace; I believe a religion can also spread "by osmosis", as it were, and just appear.

Usually, when you found a religion, or have your first religion established in any city, the game offers you the opportunity to make it your state religion. To do that manually, click on the praying hands icon in the row at the upper right of the "world view" screen, then click on the symbol of the religion you want (it has to be one worshipped somewhere in your civilization) and choose the option to make it your national faith.

The population of your city determines how many tiles your city can work. This determines how many food/hammers/commerce your city can produce. So it population matters quite much.

And having an interconnected road network allows your units to move around your empire easier and connects your cites to the trade network, and thus to resources.

The bigger your city, the more commerce and production that city can generate for your empire--that means more units, faster research, etc. Civilization is an anti-Malthusian model of population growth. More population is always better. The problem is that you must keep your population happy--though this is less serious a problem than in previous versions of the game. Negative health factors can also slow your growth, but you can address those by building aqueducts or hospitals in the city or by connecting your trade network to new sources of food.

Building roads is good for a number of reasons. For one thing, some of your cities will need roads to be connected to your capital in order to get the benefits of luxury goods or food sources (see above). Roads also help your units move quickly between your cities, which in war time is very, very important.

when i researched buddhism a pop up came up and said " yes make it official" or something similar, then it went for anarchy. after when i researched catholicism this pop up never came up again. how do i make catholicism my state religion rather than buddhism. and is it possible to have many religions in ur civilization?

As stated above: Click the praying hands icon on the top right section of the screen to change state religion.

You can have multiple religions in your cities, but only one state religion.

how do i make catholicism (you mean christianity) my state religion rather than buddhism. and is it possible to have many religions in ur civilization?

On the "world screen", click the praying hands icon in the row at the upper right. Then click on the Christian cross in the screen that comes up, and choose the option that makes Christianity your state religion.

Yes, you can have more than one religion in your civilization; the religion(s) worshipped in a city are indicated by the icons (cross, star-of-David, etc) below its name on the world view, or in the upper right of the city screen. While most "religious" improvements work best if the religion involved is your state religion, they also have lesser effects that apply regardless of that.

To make a city grow, you have to build farms and other improvements with workers, then click on the city. This will open the city screen, where you can choose which plots to work. Since you only have a level one city, you can only work one tile. choose a farm tile, and your city will grow. Keep in mind that a city will not grow when producing workers or settlers. If your city grows too big, then your citizens will start to riot because of overcrowding. To fix this, provide them with some health buildings, (like aquaducts) also, you can use slavery, which is unlocked by the Bronzeworking tech, to kill off part of your population to complete a building or unit. This will, however, make your city angry with for 10 turns, but less so than if it was overcrowded.

Roads are used to trade resources between cities (like if one of them is an excellent mining city with copper near it, connect it with roads to other cities to allow them to use that copper. Also, roads allow your units to move twice as fast along a tile that has a road on it.

To create your own state religion, research one of these techs: Meditation (buddhism), Polytheism (hinduism), Monotheism (judaism), Theology (christianity), Code of Laws (confucianism) Philosophy (Toaism), or Divine Right (Islam). to switch between these religions once you have these techs, go to the top right toolbar in the main screen. Click on the icon that looks like someone praying, and choose your religion. Sometimes other religions that you have not researched will leak into your lands if an AI discovers them first. You can also do this will the other AI's (NOTE: It is sometimes a good idea politically to become the same religion as your most dangerous or powerful rivals, so they will have less incentive to invade you) The world screen is the screen where you do all your actions such as moving troops, choosing things to research, ect.

PS. If you have the time, read the in-depth article within this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=165632

That is what the link I posted goes to.

Meditation -> Buddhism
Polytheism -> Hinduism
Monotheism -> Judaism
Civil Service -> Confuscianism
Philosophy - > Taoism
Theology -> Christianity
Divine Right -> Islam

You would have to be the first civ to research Theocracy to automatically have Christianity as a religion in your civ. If you weren't the first, you will have to wait until it spreads to one of your cities or conquer a city that has it If you are going to adopt a state religion, pick the one that will provide the most benefits to the most cities. Look at the religous advisor screen to ascertain the benefits of each religion before picking one. Remember that picking a religion can come with serious negative diplomatic points so only pick a religion that benefits your civ.

Compliments like that make all the hard work worthwhile.

<sniff> Group hug!

hi yes that helped alot guys!!

i dont understand though how to build cottages. i cant seem to build them please help! and also when i move my mouse during the game to another area it seems to lag a little. does anyone know why it does this?

Since you're new in the game, I would suggest you automate your workers so they do all their job without your interferance...And as soon as you're familiar with the improvents they make on the terrain then you can turn them back into manual..As for state religion, it's always best for your empire to have as state religion the religion most of your cities follow, and best for you diplomacy to have the same religion with as many civs as possible..Some lagging should be expected in such a "heavy" on the machine game especially during the end of turns...
