I just downloaded CivUP and VEM, but I didn't have any interest in the VEM. Unfortunately, putting a "_" brfore the VEM folder didn't prevent it from loading. So I completely deleted the VEM folder, but now I can't load my game from the main menu. I get a runtime error and then the game crashes. Do I NEED to have the VEM folder there for the game CivUP mod to work?

EDIT: I redownload the whole Mod and put the "_" in front of the VEM folder. I no longer have the VEM mod loading, so that's fine. However, I still have the Load game problem. Additionally, if I start a new game and bring up the Menu screen, the Load option doesn't even exist. More info: my game version is 511 and my CivUP version is 129. I deleted my Cache folder and my ModUserData folder.

Here are some screenshots to illustrate my problem. As you can see in the first pic, there is no "load" option in the main menu:

And here is a screenshot of the Mods I have loaded:

IIRC, CivUP removes the LOAD GAME options when a game is already running. As for loading your previous save that was started with VEM active, my guess is that it's crashing because VEM adds units and buildings which can alters the structure of the saved game. This was the same with many mods for Civ4.

Take a glance over the Common Checklist. :)

Loading from within an active game breaks mods. Until firaxis fixes this problem, we must exit to the main menu to load a save.

Updating the game or changing mods should be done between ending one game and starting the next. Loading a save file that used a different version of Civ/mods doesn't work.

Doing so gives me the following error and crashes the game:

Were these your steps?

  1. Install the mod.
  2. Deactivate VEM.
  3. Do the common checklist.
  4. Start a new game.
  5. Save the game.
  6. Load the game.
It worked when I did this to check.

Pretty close. I did 3,1,2,4,5,6. Does it matter that I did them in that order?

That should be okay. Do things work if you skip step 2, using the full project?

Yes, I was still having the problem with VEM enabled. But then I tried starting a game with just CivUP and not InfoAddict and it worked perfectly. So I guess there's a conflict between the 2 Mods.

Which version of InfoAddict do you have? I'm using InfoAddict (v 16).

Yeah, me too. Oh well, it works without InfoAddict loaded so I'll learn to live without it. Unless it's one of those issues about which one gets loaded first.

I have the same problem as shaglio (Feb. 12) : no LOAD option. To try to solve the problem I did this:
- disabled all other mods
- cleared cache and moduserdata
- deleted config.ini
- started a new game
Result, everything works fine, except that the LOAD option isn't there. If I restart without the mod and start a game initiated while this mod was on, the LOAD option is still absent. The problem seems to be "written" in the save file.
I've seen about a VEM folder to disable, but I don't have such a folder.
Note that I'm still in the French version, I don't believe that is the problem.
Any suggestion ?

Are you saying that the "load game" option is disabled within a VEM/CivUP game? That's intentional because loading from within such a game wouldn't work. You have to go to the main menu to load a VEM/CivUP game.

Zaldron, I downloaded the file "Civ V Unofficial Patch (G&K) , V18", and only that one. Do you mean that this very mod implies loading games only from the main menu ?

Yes both mods ( VEM and UP ) have the load option in game disabled because it will bring nasty bugs. This decision was made by Thal because there are problems for the game to load mods properly when you dont load via the main menu and firaxis didn't fix this problem.

So you must go via the main menu -> mods etc. like when you load a game after you had a break.
With this way the mods load properly and the bugs are avoided.

Thanks everybody for these quick and clear answers. Actually, I don't reload that often, so that shouldn't be too much of a drag.

Just load from the main menu and you're fine.

Never load from within an active game when using mods (not just this one). It messes up most lua-code mods. Many mod authors aren't aware of the problem because it's a rather obscure issue that took me half a year to identify. When I reported it to Firaxis they added a "disable ingame loading" option for mods. I didn't inquire further, but I'd guess it's an unfixable problem with how Civ caches temporary data.
