I've always been under the impression that if you had a motherboard with "Onboard" sound, that mean't in order to change yer sound-card device thingie, you had to get a new motherboard. I was talking to my brother about upgrading, and he said I could just buy a PCI soundcard, and use that. It should work fine. This never occured to me before... Is it true? Would all I have to do is stick it in, install the new drivers, uninstall the old ones, and be happy? :)

If so, what type of soundcard should I be looking for? I'm wanting a decent one, but don't know much about them. Is an "Avance Ac 97 Audio" good? This is the one I have presently, and am wondering if I should actually change... Some games don't run very smoothly when I put the sound quality up...

Thanks to those who respond :)

Newer motherboards with on-board sound should automatically disable the on-board sound when you install a sound-card, otherwise you shold be able to disable it in the bios setup.

As for a 'good' one, I don't really know. Read a few reviews. You probably can't go wrong with a creative labs soundblaster, Audigy or Live! would be my suggestion. But Like I say, I'm no expert. :(

^What he said.

I'm using a mobo that has onboard sound, but it's disabled and I'm using an Audigy 2 soundcard in its place.

Thanks. Now i'm unsure whether I actually need a new soundcard, as my friend has the same, and whilst playing the same game, with the same sound-quality settings, mine is quite laggy/sticks, and his doesn't :hmm:
Does anyone have an explanation for this? My computer is .4Ghz slower, but I didn't think this would make any difference. Am I wrong? (the game runs fine if i put the sound effects right down to 11Khz, whilst at 44Khz it runs horribly)

Vid card won't affect sounds performance (shouldn't at least).

Are you both running the same driver version? An update may fix your problem.

Yeah, check for any BIOS updates, make sure you have the proper drivers installed for your onboard sound, and the same basic settings.

0.4 Ghz less will not make any difference in the general performance, nor should it even have anything to do with your sound.

what video card you got? video card will make more difference than audio bard.

As others have said, it shouldn't make a difference, my probelms are with sound :p (i've got an ATI Radeon 7500 anyways)

I'm not totally sure, i'll ask him when next time I see him, but i've just downloaded the latest one anyways. I'll transfer it to the "pc in question" ;) and test. I'll edit in the results to this post :)

Btw Jeratain, they were the proper ones, just not the most up-to-date.

EDIT: The new driver does absolouly nothing for the game's performance. WHen I put the sound quality to it's default setting, (which isn't even a particularly good one), the game runs incredibly stickily. Just incase anyone is wondering, it's Battlefield 1942 i'm playing.

Any other thoughts? And Jeratain, what is a BIOS update?

Do you happen to have Windows 98? Games don't like WDM drivers & Windows 98.

Video card doesn't have anything to do with game performance? Whatever.

I play battle field 1942 and i find that when i put the number of bots up
i start to loose sound(no sound) then if I put them up further it starts to skip frames on the video.

Im not an expert on these things but my guess is that when you put the settings up it requires more processing power and if your comps not fast enough it sacrifices some thing

also check the readme file it does have some sound cards with known issues

t92300

oops just noticed dont get an Avance Ac 97 its mentioned in the read me as one of the cards with problems

quote "Avance AC97 PCI
Voices and soundfx will be sped up.
This is known as the 'chipmunk effect.' "

and the rest of the read me which it may pay to read especially if your comp has 128mb ram or less there are some certain settings which should be lowered.

as texture flicker and some drop-out. By the time you read this
the latest drivers form ATI should be available to address these
issues.

SETTING 16-bit
- Setting the color depth to 16 bits will give you more flickering
(z-buffer errors).

- When playing the game with 16-bit you might experience
flickering on the buildings if LIGHTMAPS under video options
is turned on.

- VIDEO SETTINGS
Read the section Improving Gameplay Performance below to help
minimize some of the above video card issues.

"Ran out of virtual memory"

Free up some more hard drive space.

==================================================================
Installing DirectX 8.1
==================================================================

If you declined to install DirectX 8.1 when initially installing
Battlefield 1942, you can install at a later time by simply in-
serting Disk 1 into your CD-ROM drive and running "dxsetup.exe",
located in the DirectX directory on the install CDROM. This is
found on Disk 1 under the "Redist\DirectX81" folder. Just double-
click on "dxsetup.exe".

Latest version of DirectX can be downloaded from:
www.microsoft.com\directx
Previous versions of DirectX are not fully supported.

Improving Gameplay Performance
==================================================================

Some machines will benefit from experimenting with your Network/
Video/Sound options:

INTERNET/NETWORK PERFORMANCE

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR A GOOD INTERNET PERFORMANCE!

- Before joining an Internet game you should check the settings
under CONNECTION SPEED in the Internet tab to make sure that
you have the appropriate connection type set. If you experience
lag or jitter while on an Internet game, try setting your
CONNECTION SPEED to the next lowest setting.

- JOINING MULTIPLAYER GAMES:
To get the best performance given your computer we recommend
you follow these guidelines:

HARDWARE
Minimum system - Join servers that have up to 20 players

Recommended systems - Join servers that have up to 32 players

High end systems - Join servers that have up to 32+ players

BANDWIDTH
Modem users - Join games with a maximum of 16 players.

ISDN users - Join games with a maximum of 24 players.

ADSL/Cable users - Join games with a maximum of 32 players.

T1/LAN users - Join games with a maximum of 32+ players.

VIDEO SETTINGS

- Systems with 128MB of RAM should always run the game with
video settings set to "LOW".

- From the Main Menu choose the "Options" menu. Then select
the "Video" menu, select "Texture Quality" and experiment with
the slider in order to find the best setting for your computer.
You can also try lowering the "Graphics Quality" and "Effect
Quality" in order to meet your machines level of performance.

- Also from the "Video" menu, uncheck the "SHADOWS" check box.
This will prevent the game from creating dynamic shadows for
soldiers and vehicles and should improve performance.

- Also from the "Video" menu, uncheck the "LIGHTMAPS" check box.
This will prevent the game from adding detailed shadows on the
buildings, which should improve your performance.

- Also from the "Video" menu, uncheck the "ENVIRONMENT MAPPING"
check box. This will remove the environmental effects on
vehicles and weapons. This should improve your performance.

- Also from the "Video" menu, try to reduce your view distance
in order to increase performance. This will impact on gameplay
since your opponents will see you before you can spot them.

- Also from the "Video" menu, check the "ALTERNATIVE SPAWN INTER-
FACE" which will give you a black background when you bring up
the spawn interface while playing instead of keeping the game
view in the background. This should improve mouse control in
that menu on slower machines.

- Try reducing your video resolution to 640x480 in your "Video"
menu. The lower the resolution, the easier it is for your
computer to run the game.

- From the "Video" menu you can try to lower your color depth from
32 to 16 bit by picking your desired resolution with the color
depth of 16 (800x600x16).

SOUND SETTINGS

- From the "Sound" menu you can try to lower your audio quality
by checking the 22 or 11khz checkbox. Also test with lowering
the number of channels used to 24 or 16.

- Systems with 128MB of RAM should always use 11khz.

- From the "Sound" menu you can try to lower your sound detail
to "MEDIUM" or "LOW". This will prioritize sounds harder so
that only the core sounds of the game get played.

- From the "Sound" menus second page you can activate "HARDWARE
ACCELERATION" given that your soundcard supports this. This
should improve your performance.

GAMEPLAY SETTINGS

- Turning the CPU-TIME GIVEN TO AI slider down will improve
performance in the single-player maps. Experiment with the
setting which best suits your computer.

- Turning the NUMBER OF BOTS slider down will improve performance
in the single-player maps. Experiment with the setting which
best suits your computer.

MODEM USERS

- Software compression can impact performance for online games.
We advise that you turn all software compression off when
playing Battlefield 1942 over a modem.

IN GAME

- By always keeping your command interface hidden (toggle with F8)
you should improve your performance while playing. If you still
want to leave it up you can make sure that you have turned your
Radio Tooltips off in the "Options" > "Customize". This should
give you better performance. Both of these changes will most be
most noticeable on low end systems.

^Good stuff to read to compare your problems to.

Ehh don't worry about your BIOS. If you don't know about it, it's better you don't think about it (you could mess up your computer if you do something without knowing what you're doing).

Could you also post all of your system specs up for us, including your motherboard model?

Video card doesn't have anything to do with game performance? Whatever.

No, i'm saying it shouldn't affect how well my SOUND works.

Pentium 4 2.4Ghz processor
80Gb Hard drive
512 Mb SDRAM
64Mb ATI Radeon 7500 Graphics
Realtek/Avance ac 97 Audio Soundcard (onboard)
P4 Titan GA-8ID533, Intel 845 chipset - motherboard
Winxp home edition

Can't think of anything else that should matter, My Cd drive reads at 40x...

Im not an expert on these things but my guess is that when you put the settings up it requires more processing power and if your comps not fast enough it sacrifices some thing

My point is, that I have all of the settings at the worst they can be, and when I put the sound to the Default one, it runs incredibly stickily. My friend has the same soundcard, and does not experience this problem.
Avance AC97 PCI
Voices and soundfx will be sped up.
This is known as the 'chipmunk effect.'

That's about the only problem I haven't had with my soundcard

(you could mess up your computer if you do something without knowing what you're doing).

It doesn't matter, someone gave me some advice, which was less that satisfactory ;) *cough* RIK MELEET *cough* :mischief:
I am reformatting my computer because of it...

Let us know how the format goes.

Well I formatted it, and it seemed to be working fine. But then every time I restarted, alot of lovely errors started appearing again :) (not the same ones though)
I've formatted it again, and now everything seems to be just dandy -- apart from the same old sound problem with Battlefield.
I'm going to get a new soundcard, and i've heard lots of good things about the Soundblaster Audigy 2, so that'll be the one. £59 isn't bad.
I'll also be getting a new graphics card, probably one of the ATI Pro 9600 range, but i'm unsure if they'll work on my 4x AGP slot... (if anyone know's, i'd be grateful)

Thanks for the help everyone :)
