Clashing of Empires - A standard map version of Rhye's Civilization Expanded

Yep youre too pessimistic ;) I Cannot draft yet btw, no Nationalism (unless it comes sooner?).

I only played a few more turns, but the roman/mongol invasion has been completely stopped by the Celts and Scands. Babylon has pushed back the Indian attack with the Chinese's help, but it seems Zululand allied with Babylon against China lol! The alliances are getting blurrier, but as long as I don't get any of my allies going against me I don't care if they fight against each other.

Pretty much every nation has lancers/musketeers or cavalry/fusiliers. Some nations have started having nationalism, and I'll have it soon too. I'm not yet the most advanced, and my armies are getting weaker from fighting on 2 fronts. But I'm still holding ;)

Who's the leader in culture, score...?

Great you're holding well,
those Hispan cities of Carthage are way to precious to lose... ;-)

Leader in culture, 1 city: Rome (of course). Whole civ: India.

Leader for score, I really don't remember, but it's either India, Babylon, Rome Mongolia or Joruba.

Please give me exact nubers about culture, score,
it would be valuable feedback to fine tune values
for victory conditions, cultures assigned to wonders, etc :)

How will you win this game?

EST or EDT or whatever they call it . Eastern Time, GMT - 5.

Checking victory screen right now...
ok.. I got 9% area and 19% popualation (highest pop! :) )

Iroquois have 9% land and 11% pop, as my top rival.

Culture. Carthage = 3987, Roma = 7666 (EVIL!!!!!!!!)
Whole civ = 12077, India = 18064

Score: 694, Iroquois = 838

Current turn: 323 (1946 AD)

====

How do I plan to win this? By surviving in this game until I get bored and start a new game with my new understanding of how to play Carthage lol.

Thanks. :)
I took a look at your "map" and saw only a few Carthaginian cities in North-Africa...
I know, you settled Hispania... but still, there is place for more good ones in Africa...

actually there was room for only one more, which I had never had time to build till the 1800 or 1900's because I was always changing settler production to military units...

Seriously though, my style of play is really getting challenged with this mod. In normal civ3 (I play as Monarch usually) I have no problem settling quickly and keeping up with my infrastructure and military, and science. Here I'm falling behind on all counts, probably because settlers and workers take so damn long to build.

Well, yes, settlers are tough to "build" - you have to get as much as you can in the ancient age. Consider - as Carthage - having cities on the shore with harbors and not much else: to make money... I saw place on your map for two cities, on eis in the west-end, one in the middle...

After ancient age - getting cities is done by conquering...

(now I think I will try a game of CoE on monarch,
to see how fast the tech is going...
Shall I try a Carthage one?...:))

But yeah that's the thing, I never had time to build enough settlers to fill things out because I was always in need of military units or sometimes some improvements. Perhaps I should focus on getting harbors earlier?

I'll have to try again :)

Imagine...
I started a monarch game with Carthage...
I had two cities and went for a quick Great Library.
All was fine, G.L. in BC 950, and I had 2 more settlers near ready following this.
I had embassies with half of the world, polite peace and all, when...

Two Celtic ships loaded spears on my land...
and I had only one warriors in my cities each... ouch!

That was it, the end of the glorious empire I had...

But it is beyond any fancy I could have -
the Celts??? In Africa? So early? Attacking?... yep :(

well I played another game as Rome, not too bad, till the Babylonians invaded and I was holding strong.. So I decided to try Carthage again ;)

This time I figured out one thing I was missing from my previous games : micro-management. I grew lazy over the last year and always let the governor manage the citizens.. This time I could build settlers much faster by controlling the city workers. Got all 5 cities on the northern coast of Africa, but only 2 in Hispania. Then things were going pretty well till Ethiopia invaded... Half my empire gone in a century OUCH.

Gonna start a new game. Looking at the replay, Ethiopia was engulfing most of Africa already in 1120 AD.. Scandinavia was pretty strong too, holding cities from Denmark to to Mongolia (just north of the Caspian sea). Rome, as usual, wasn't expanding, though they did build Pax Romana at 990 AD (last time I saw it was 970 AD). Maybe it should have a bit more culture so the romans build it earlier? And less culture from another roman wonder, if balance is needed.

Gonna start a new Carthage game now ;) My next goal: now that I can build cities faster.. Conquest of the Nile!

MUcH BETTER!

All of the north african coast was settled by me by 470 BC. And then instead of going to pacifist builder mode, I built more military units along with 2 settlers to colonize Hispania (the Celts got one city in the north), waged a small war against Ethiopia (I wasn't ready for this one but neither were they after I sent Joruba and Zululand against them).

Then Islam came along, I built both wonders in Carthage thanks to a Scientific leader, and war erupted between Carthage and Ethiopia in 1000 AD. Thebes fell in 1030, which finally triggered a golden age when a numidian mercenary defeated an Ansar Warrior (in my previous game where I got my ass kicked by Carthage, it seemed the War Elephants didn't produce a golden age!? must've been a fluke or something, and I haven't built any this time).

To distract Ethiopia, I again sent the Zulus and Jorubans at war with them, and I kept driving down the Nile.. Thebes, then Napata, then Thebes again (revolt), then their capital Meroe! Napata again (argh!), Aksum (on the red sea), Ileret (south east of Meroe), and finally Kintampo which they captured from Joruba in the previous war.

Meanwhile, Scandinavia tried a pathetic invasion of Spain with 2 horse archers, and they were easily stopped by knights and crossbowmen. For good measure, I allied with the Celts, Romans, Mongols and Babylonians to keep Scandinavia occupied for a while ;) Then I signed peace with Ethiopia as they had merely one city left (I thought the Jorubans would take it but they signed peace too), and I now have to start the rebuilding process - I need an economy!

The year is 1448, I'm about to discover Metallurgy, so science is much closer to real life than it was in earlier attempts. I'm on par with Babylon in my research, which is a relief as they got the Great Library. It seems the Romans got a colony (their 5th city only! they were unlucky...) on the west african coast after the Ethiopians destroyed a Joruban city. Scandinavia is holding up pretty well against the Mongols, but they have Keshiks so who knows how long that will last, especially with the dogpile against them ;)

Some stats: Turn #224 (1448 AD)

%of area: 6 --- Mongolia: 5
%pop: 12 --- Babylon: 9

Culture: Carthago 1868 --- Roma 1781
Carthage: 4110 --- Ethiopia: 5725

Score: 461 --- Scandinavia: 493

Here's the minimap from the replay, in 1448 AD:

Here's something interesting: I see a lot of nations who are monarchies (theocratic for Babylon, Scandinavia, Celts, Mongols; feudal for Jorubans), and not so many Republics (Rome of course, Zululand, and Carthage!). A nice change from normal civ games

Here's the minimap from 1840 after a war with the Celts, and at the beginning of a war against Babylon that just started in Spain. Scandinavia has really suffered at the hands of the mongols, Ethiopia is gone, Ireland is mine:

Quite a nice progress, really, on the way to a victory of some sort, I guess

What tech are you learning now in the 1840s?

Will the Mongols become a kind of Soviet Union? :)

Will you conquer the Zulus at some point?

yeah I doubt I'll fulfill many of the victory requirements, except maybe domination as I already have 11% of the population (thank god for the nile!) or was that land area? I forget..

Current tech being researched: Enlightenment. I justr discovered steam power (yeah it's starting to be a little slower for tech research now..)

The mongols really do seem to be the soviet union. They need one of the remaining scand cities to mostly match the USSR territory lol!

As for the Zulus, may they live in peace lol. I cannot afford a war in the south, especially with the Babylonians who are trying to invade Spain. And I finally figured out why: COAL. I have 2 musketmen in each of the 3 cities, who need to stand against approximately 8 cavalries coming down from France. ouch. Good thing I had some fusiliers and cavalries in Ireland I could transfer easily...

done the game with japan. Rome destroyed (finally).

I started one with iroquois. They have plenty of space and you can create new nice ground for settling chopping some forests around. I had a scientific leader with philosophy BUT (?) there are no wonders to build until industrial age. So I'll have to waste support on him for I don't know how amny turns.
Their first unit is also quite useless, since is defensive and in 10 AD I still have not fight any war (I know only the mayans and barbarians devide us). Technologically I am some techs behind other continents due to isolation (I think since I have not met anyone...). Think I'll wait for mounted warriors and then conquer meso and south america.

Are you playing v32, Riker?
Tell me if you find any bugs...

Well, yes, playing in America is maybe not too exciting...
But I often see the AI having some big wars
in the Middle age and after btw Maya and Iroquois
