Do you think scientists should attempt to clone the wooly mammoth?

I watched something that showed scientists finding a wooly mammoth perfectly preserved in ice... I'm sure that if they tried, it could be done.

I'm all for it. I think it would be amazing to see a creature that hasn't been around for thousands of years. What do you think?

Could we have mammoth burgers? If so, yes.

You could get some of those massive ribs like in The Flinstones!

It would be cool if you get the cloneing down pat now so when the "big freeze" comes and kills of the ephalumps and wuzzles we can have something to terrify with cloned lab mice with human ears growing out thier backs.

everyone loves a mammoth. I think it would be flipping sweet if they did that. then, maybe, they could use the technology on mosquitos preserved in amber to clone dinosaurs.....oh wait :)

seriously though, from a scientific perspective I think its interesting, from an average joe perspective, how is this going to benefit mankind?

Eh, it's something to do, probobly be interesting. Why not?

No. Their habitats are long gone. No reason. Maybe like 1 to study, then eat it.
Well, there are always zoos...

Why not?

Although then we are totally denying the inevitable forces of darwinism... survival of the fittest and all.

I think it would be interesting, if a little wierd.

Why is Darwinism inevitable?

Because even if you 'got around it' that would in itself be a part of Darwinism.

Why shouldn't we clone one. I know people are thinking "If God wanted us to clone animals he would let us". Guss what - we have the tech to do it so I say "if he didn't want us to do it he would have made it impossible. Just like there is no way to avoid conservation of energy."

Mammoths may be able to survive in the wild in northern Canada and Alaska. They lived there until they were hunted into extinction. I think it is a fine idea. Perhaps we should also try to clone other animals we have driven into extinction.

Yeah i remember watching a show some years ago about it, it was in Siberia right? A frozen mammouth, i remember them using an helicopter and all. Was quite amazing.

Why? I'm for legal cloning and genetic modification of plants and animals when it is for the good of humanity, but what is the point here? Could human lives or standard of living be increased by cloning a mammoth? Or is it just idle curiosity? Unless there is a real, pressing reason, I think this money could be poured into more valuable research elsewhere. (Like, say, curing cancer or Alzheimers)

Yeah, I don't see the point, either.
