I've been having a mindblock for the last few months, I don't know what to write my college admissions essay about. I'm using the common application so there is a choice where you can write about any topic of your choosing. So I was wondering if anyone could be me some sort of inspiration with a specific idea, not a broad topic, and also any pointers on writing my essay.

Well, avoid controversial issues such as religion and politics...

I've known of people writing about role models and personal achievements.

I didn't use the common app, though, and I always hated open-ended essays, so I'm not too much help...

I always thought the fact that you americans had to write college essays was really dumb.
They don't care bout that crap here in NZ.

Mebbe there is some good sites that can help with the essay? i mean what kinda stuff can you write on?

Any topic of my choosing, and I need inspiration to write something profound.

They don't care here either. I mean... why should someone wanting to study nuclear physics be able to write a great essay? Oh you wrote a nice essay about the history of the labrador, I'm sure you'd make a great artificial intelligence programmer. Just examples.

Well... it's more for liberal arts colleges and such to see what kind of person you are and blah blah blah yadda yadda. So, any help please?

i used the "write about anything you want" prompt on the common app. I wrote about the internal conflict i felt when i visited my Brazilian family...and how im half brazilian by blood, but i dont speak the language at all, so i felt like a tan gringo.

My essay was funny, and two universities said that it was a big reason for me getting in. these guys read thousands of these things a day. make yours stand out

Not just liberal arts colleges.

Although I think some places just want to make sure you can communicate well.

Another suggestion would be to write about an experience of yours that influenced your character (if you had such an experience). But what Matt said, make it stand out. It's not just whether you get into the school or not, but if they offer you financial aid or other such goodies.

Humans were gown to participate in many acts of violence when we were in small tribes, hunting, war, etc. Because the common man no longer participates in this violence, that tpye of energy now comes out in _________. [fill in the blank]

Hello [insert college name] admissions officer.

I did my college app essay on a brick of a book called Aztec. It told the story of an aztec man describing his life to some spanish inquisitors. I only read it for the saucy parts in it but then I though perhaps I should read the rest of the book and it was a lot more interesting! Sadly the man gets killed by the inquisitors right before a pardon and reward from the king to the man arrives from Spain. By the way, spoiler back there.

How do they get to know the applicant then?
They used to just do interviews, but with so many applicants, interviews become impossible.

Thus the collage essay comes into play.

Do they at least have interviews in New Zealand?

As for the original question: If you can't think of something with for the sixth choice, use one of the five questions it offers. That's the reason the're there; some people find a prompt helpfull. You might be one of them.

I already tried those other 5 and nothing came, so this is why I am asking for help.

Tangentially, it's my understanding that the Ivy League started the practice of demanding personal statements because they thought too many Jews were getting into the colleges.

I just read a thing about that in The Economist

...apparently jew males weren't considered manly enough. seriously.

That was Yale's particular take on it-- they wanted strong manly American men. The Aryan ideal, I guess. However, there's more to it than that: apparently the Ivy League hierarchy felt there was a danger of Jews becoming too influential in the American elite.

Not really. They do if you're applying for teacher's college etc. Otherwise for scholarships and stuff like that you have to do separate applications and some of them require essays and interviews.

Besides there's only 8 universities in NZ. So here it's more bout us (the student) deigning to go to their university. :D
Except of course of med school and law etc, then it's on marks and testimonials from your teachers, same for teacher's college as well really.

Write some bull****e essay about how education touched your heart.

also, No interveiws here, just 3 Cs at year13 exams and you can go to any universitys in the land. although if there is limited space on the course grades will be considered. so you need high grades for medicene and law.
