Hello everyone.

I've been trying out the Civ5 Unofficial Patch again and I'm amazed at what a hard time the AI can give me in combat on that mod.

I started pretty close to Russia and we've already been at war twice. In the second war, after dealing with some of her forces near my borders, I started advancing toward the only city of hers that I could see, which was Moscow. As I neared Moscow, she had a catapult that I think was sitting there on a hill, making it hard to approach that way.It eventually left, though, but she had at least one catapult right outside Moscow. So I tried sending a melee unit to go through the woods to the east of Moscow to destroy the catapult. But then came three warrior squads and started advancing at my melee unit, forcing it to retreat just to survive! After that the warriors started heading back toward Moscow, and my melee unit was busy healing.

So I decided instead to send a catapult to get on the hill outside of Moscow and start killing off her army that way.So the catapult started making it's way there, and then it started getting hit by archers that I couldn't even see! After that I was retreating once again. Then an archer that I think had at least three promotions came out into the woods, driving some of my units back even further to avoid being shot by it.So then I decided to send a melee unit to close in on the archer and kill it.Well, when I did, the archer retreated and the melee unit started getting hit by other archers, forcing me to retreat yet again:mad:

This little deadlock continued for a while and then I finally just decided to make peace.Sheesh!

I love the mod, though.

Just wanted to share that little story.

If the mod is actually responsible for this clever war behavior by the AI, I'm going to download it ASAP.

I don't know if it is or not, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen the AI do that on the vanilla game.

I want to try this how do I find it? What is it listed as in the online mods section when you open the game?

It doesn't really make sense that it was the unofficial patch, since it isn't possible to make changes to the AI. However, the AI is much better with city defense since the last few patches, so it could have been that.

In the mods list in Civ5 it is called The Unofficial Patch and Vanilla Enhanced, or something to that effect.

Yes, the AI is a bit better at city defense, but on offense there is issues there. I am playing as the Mongols and Russia has backstabbed me twice in two wars. The second one just finished, but in that war, Cathy brings 6 cannon with a pikeman behind to invade my closest city. I simply hit them with ranged attacks from my keshiks, and finished them with my longswords. A foolish gambit on the part of the AI. The AI needs to get better at attacking, and more importantly holding cities. It can take cities, but cannot hold them. In the game the Russians did manage to take three of my cities, it took two of its former cities back in that last war. However, I was able to take them back in no time flat, and bring peace terms very advantageous to me.

Cathy gave me St. Petersburg. One of her best remaining cities. She has Moscow the capital and one more city left. This time I am going to attack with my musket, cavalry, cannon army as soon as peace ends and finish Moscow. I'll leave her in that remaining city. Now its my turn to finally declare war. In this game I never had the chance they all came after me this Emperor level is fun. After that I will have three civs ahead of me in tech, but not by much Korea, Germany, and one unmet.

Anyway with this patch or mod, how is the AI on the offense?

VEM gives heavy promotion bonuses to the AI as a way to compensate for its AS (Art Stup). Also, HP's are doubled; I have found the AI better at retreating and trying to heal post-little Joni, so the combination of both VEM and a slightly better AI in some aspects of combat could make for some of the effects the OP is seeing. Oh, and the AI in VEM gets also extra-sight range.

On the other hand, VEM levels the field in other areas like happiness and bonuses to production, food and gold. All in all, well balanced although still evolving (especially after the last changes to AI gold-use logic).

I like this mod, but why does the XP next to the leaders header always need to be changed for each version. On the latest version it now reads "1" on first settlement.
Is that a simplification thing?

The original poster was probably victim of VEM's heavily promoted AI units. There was something wrong with the last couple of versions where the AI units had about 10 promotions from the start of the game. That would explain him getting hit by unseen archers using the Range +1 promotion.

I think Thal fixed this problem in the latest version but I have yet to give it a try. I heavily recommend the entire VEM mod to anyone seeking a deeper experience with Civ V until the release of GaK.

Like I said in the OP, me and Russia have had two wars, and in the first war she did try attacking a little. But she really didn't do that good.I think most of what she had was just warriors anyway.

Woops.Something didn't go exactly right with that quote:lol:

As far as I know I've got the latest version, but I haven't checked it today, and maybe not tomorrow either. But that archer that came out there had at least three promotions, one of which gave it extra range.

Edit:I just checked and there has been a new version come out yesterday that I don't have yet.

Thats ok, I was curious about the AI when it attacks. Let me know if anything else happens that suprises you about the AI , as the game unfolds. I have been curious about the AI since this game came out.
