Suppose a vulture is attacking an axeman (both unpromoted, no defensive bonuses). Is the axeman's strength

i) 6.25 = 5+(5*50% vs melee)-(5*25% vulture vs melee)

or

ii) 6 = 5+(5*50% vs melee)-(6*25% vulture vs melee)?

In other words, does the vulture's 25% bonus vs melee units get multiplied by its own 6 or the defending axeman's 5?

According to pieceofmind:
All bonuses/penalties are applied to the defender.
So it would be:
6 (vulture) vs 5+25% (axeman[50%-25% melee])
6:strength: vs. 6.25:strength:

Slight amendment: all situational bonuses are applied to the defender. Bonuses such as come from Combat or First Strike promos are applied to whichever unit is entitled to them.

I've asked this before a while back and I don't think anyone was sure of the answer, or perhaps I just forgot. How are first strike chances dealt with in combat odds? How would you calculate the odds for say.... a drill one archer on grasslands vs. an unpromoted swordsman?

I am pretty certain that a first strike chance is a 50% chance of a 1st strike, and a first strike is a round where the non-first striker deals no damage. Do, in order for a first strike to do anything you need to:

1) Hit your 50%
2) Win that round

and even then you'll still only deal one rounds worth of damage, which is 20 if the combat strengths are equal, more if stronger, less if weaker

Not quite. Thankfully, Bushface already made the reply I was going to make...

Keyword being situational. :) As an example, city raider promotions are always situational because it has to be combat from a unit attacking a city. Combat promotions however are not situational because they will be used in every battle that unit fights.

See the link in my sig. On average, a first strike chance has a 50% chance of becoming a first strike. Here the key word (two words actually) is "on average". For rough calculations, average results are often useful so it's not bad to describe first strike chances as being half the value of a normal first strike.

Assuming you were the one I answered last time, there is a way to work out how the odds are affected but it's pretty complicated.

This is a pdf I wrote a little while back. I admit it's not very reader-friendly at the moment because I haven't really bothered to make it readable to a wide audience. If you like you can PM me if you have questions.
