In spain first look video is first combined unit and it is represented with just one model. I hope that land combined units will represented with more models.

I'm with you, I hope both land and sea units get more models when thei are made Armies.

I hope our good Firaxis designers are reading this. :)

I like the concept but fear that if it is mandatory that combined units have separate graphics, that this might inhibit modding since not many modders are up to creating graphics mods from whole cloth. I'd be content with some sort of markers/symbol on the primary unit making it stand out from a solo unit.

I wouldn't be surprised if what we saw was placeholder in the Spain vid. The opportunity to have cool looking corps/armies and fleets/armadas seems too great for them just to have passed on considering all the other wonderful details they have put in.

I'm pretty sure Civ Rev, who used a similar army mechanic, had separate models. So I would expect to see those here as well. And it would make sense those are last(low) on the dev list.

Even with the icon, if a ship is a single ship in a tile, a fleet should be 2/3 ships in the tile. It's the same model, but shrunk to fit multiples. It would probably need new attack animations though. OTOH, just imagine 3 tiny battleships bombarding a non-army infantry. They would have to be ridiculously small in comparison.

No, if the combined unit is just a repetition of the same model multiple times then modders would not have to do more work. Just design one boat and then make the game display it twice when you combine two.

If necessary scale the model down.

Not sure how theyd deal with animations but thats on firaxis end. Afaik modders do not do animations.

But we also need to know how combat works with stacks. If its like civ4 where it remains 1v1 battles then a marker to indicate how many unit occupy the tile may be enough.

I couldn't agree more with this. I'm really surprised they didn't do this. And yes, I'm sure an early mod will take care of it :)

It is a combined unit with higher strength than the original single unit it replaces, but less than the individual unit's combined strength.

Only tough part is telling them apart without the tooltip. Remember the change in art style was supposed to improve first glance readability, not have me guessing where fleets are in regards to my single ships. I personally hope they add another ship to the fleet model so I can tell at first glance. Still it makes no sense that a fleet would be less effective than a single ship... Usually more ships could take down single ships due to them out manuvering them...

I did see in one of the video plays that when you put a great person with a unit its in the middle and the units are around it

It's not, maybe my wording was odd. Say a single ship has strength 20, a fleet would have, say 30 strength. If you had not combined them, you would have had two ships with 20 strength (40). Just an example, fyi, we haven't seen actual real numbers yet. If this is all correct, I think armies and corps will only really be worth it when you have so many units that you have to leave units back, due to lack of maneuverability space. At some point, if you have 12 infantry, you will never get them all in to attack a city, so you start combining them into more powerful units. You end up with something with more survivability than a single unit, and you have more freedom of movement as well.

If I remember the video correctly there also were no civ tags on the units. So all the info was not being shown. The graphic may not change, but if it doesn't I"m sure there is indication in the tag.

Edit: And I was both wrong and right. There are tags and there is a slight change in the tag after the combining. Perhaps it should be a bit more apparent.

The tag changes, but it's subtle. It would be a lot more visually obvious (and more visually satisfying) if they just showed both models.

One video had Boudicca stacked with a unit, and all figs, general and warriors, were in the combined unit... so great generals at least work okay.
The combined Support units look fine, showing all models of both units, so it's disappointing that combined military units don't do the same.

Maybe it becomes too crowded if unit combines? Also, even if it does, half-wounded corps will look like healthy single unit. So, maybe keeping the same number of models is ok, just need some additional and clear indication of fleet/corps/army.
