well i'm at the crucial junction: i just finished researching nationalism and now it's time to decide whether to research communism or fascism. communism is 15 turns away and Nationalsozialismus is 16 turns.

what to do ... WHAT TO DO!!~~~ :)

here's what my country looks like ...

and the score sheet

This is a conquests 1.02 game, huge 16 civs as germany, pangea 60% water, wet temperate 5 billion, raging barbarians normal ai agression, difficulty diety.

Just kidding it's difficulty regent.

I think i am going to go for fascism, one reason is because i have a huge expanse of territory that needs to be laid with track and the double worker efficiency will help me out a lot i think in the long run. I also haven't ever tried it, so it's worth a shot. As you can see from the map, I have a large production core that would be kinda hurt from communism ... and I don't know how productive my outer cities will be under fascism.

I also don't think that these guys are going to want to share the fruits of their labors ...

I guess when the country gets super large if corruption is too much of a problem I can convert to communism ... what do you guys think is giong to happen?

Thanks~!

if anyone wants to see how ridiculously bad my play style is or how I laid out my beginning cities, you can download my save, http://www.nihil8r.com/civ3/germany1_44_nihil8r.SAV its 650 kb though.

I wish I could advise you on which government to try. I've never been particularly fond of Communism, as I've found Monarchy to be much more effective for warmongering. Then again, I haven't had the chance to play the released version of Conquests, so I have no idea if Fundamentalism is worth it...

What I can say is GOOD LUCK!:goodjob:

thanks slug! i think you will enjoy the new version. pangea maps are slower because you can't trade contacts with civs until you get Printing Press, and techs are 50 turns instead of 40 ... resources are far scarcer as well, as you can see from my map, the 1/3 of the continent I started on has only 1 source of gunpowder. the ottomans somehow got two, babylon had one, and spain should have one but i colony ganked it.

so when you do start playing, you'll find that securing iron/horses is even bigger than before, and you'll probably have to start a war to acquire gunpowder.

how come you haven't tried it yet? GPT/corruption bug?

I was part of the Conquests beta testing team, so I've already logged hundreds of hours on 'parts' of the game. What I'm not familiar with is the changes they made after I quit the testing...

I also don't have it since Christmas isn't here yet.

When did patch 1.02 come out? Mine is version 1.00. Just check Firaxis website a minute ago and haven't seen any new patch yet.

1.02 is just a minor patch that doesn't affect any gameplay issues -IIRC.

I definately wouldn't go commie with corruption bugs: FP as well as SPHQ will increase corruption, and the bigger you empire gets, the worse it will be...you mind end up with unrecoverable corruption throughout your empire.
Being German myself, I have severe problems recommending fascism -go with monarchy or republic instead: with that many cities, you should have enough unit support; and the ability to cash-rush isn't bad either (especially since you'll most likely have to do a switch out of fascism if you want to milk the game: rushing hospitals/mass transits with pop might hurt pop and happiness severly)

I've heard the switch to fascism involves population reduction. That doesn't apply to monarchy/republic now does it?

Also, I'm not sure I'd recommend Republic if you're focus is unit support. With Monarch you get freebies. With Republic, you pay 2gpt!!!!

you also get free units with republic: 1/3/4 for towns/cities/metros -IIRC. Given the number of cities he already has (and is going to conquer soon), I think he might be better off with the new Republic compared to the old one.

as to the switch question: you only lose pop when switching to fascism -I've probably expressed myself unclearly on that one. In the industrial age it is usually difficult to use pop-rushing efficiently: you just lose to much pop for the expensive units; additionally it is important to be able to cash rush when entering the milking phase: if he switches to communism/fascism now, he'll need to make one more government change later which might be counterproductive considering that fascism/communism is unlikely to be very powerfull in the interim.

So does that mean that C3C's Republic unit support is 1/3/4 and then 2gpt for everything after?

Regardless, overall, I'm thinking you're right that Republic may be his best call given what we know.

republic? how will i combat war weariness? i could easily beeline to universal suffrage, but those whiners (citizens) just seem to never shut up.

i dunno, we will see, i am going to try to play tonight. thanks for the advice! :)

man i just don't know about this conquests stuff. it's fun and the new units rule, but the 50 turn/tech REALLY slows stuff down. i am doing everything right, beating the bratwurst out of the other civs as the Nazis, and i'm nowhere near in contention for a HOF with this game. i will post a summary soon. i mean, my military acadamy town is cranking out an army every 5 turns and i already have 50% surface area and 60% population but my score is 4000 and it's 1820 or something. including armies that have died i've had probably 20 armies this game ... singlehandedly killed 8 civs and 9 is a few cities away. i'm in modern times with a recently spawned sci leader racing towards internet, the closest enemy nation is like 3 techs behind.

i'm using civ engineers and disbanded artillery along with rushbuilding to build temples, marketplaces, cathedrals and hospitals in my conquered, peripheral cities that have 100% corruption but ... how am i going to get 10,000 points over the next 150 turns when i only got 4,000 over the first 300?

EDIT - i am a moron ;)

Remember, the population Domination limit doesn't matter as long as you don't trigger the tile count. Try and get as close to it as possible. When you do that, try and take any good land (grasslands, etc) and abandon cities on weaker terrain. You can dramatically boost your score by milking population.

Good luck!
