Is communism good?
When I looked at it I saw: almost no corruption, great upkeep, and lazy workers. So is it worth it?

Yes, and it's even better in C3C with the way the FP turned out, and the addition of the Secret Police Headquarters (SPHQ), that acts like a 2nd FP for them. It's good for large empires, and pretty low corruption with good unit support. The only drawback in my mind is pop-rushing, but I guess the other benefits outweigh it.

I like communism. In general, your people pretty much keep their mouths shut, and the Secret Police is certainly a benefit for those with large empires. Also, it is a lot easier to run a full-scale war under Communism than under Republic or democracy.

Culture flip: When a city doesn't like their owner and decides to "flip" to another civilization.

When a city of yours or an AIs 'goes' (deposes) to another civ that has superior culture. It's affected by things such as your culture, their culture, units garrisoned in the city, distance to the capitals, etc. If I surround an enemy city in my land with cities with lots of culture, chances are it will flip if it's close to my capital. :)

edit: Crossposted (we posted at the same time) with Tomoyo.

a culture flip is when a smaller, less developed city gets overwhelmed by another's civs city nearby, that city usually having lots of cultural improvements. When this happens, the smaller city "flips" to the other civ's control. This can be very unfortunate if it happens to you, since you lose a city and the other civ gains one. Even worse if it happens during a war, or if your civ is in a growth spurt.

edit: triple crosspost! :nuke:

We were two whole minutes in front of you... :hmm:

Although I gave the worst definition... :(

A culture flip is when -- oops. :mischief:

I recently finished a game (cultural victory) as a democratc government, then switched to communism for the first time since I was tired of being a goody-goody and decided to bust some heads. It was a revelation -- no troop upkeep, tons less corruption, and almost everyone was hapy. Next game, I am defintiely going to try this sooner!

My question is, does Communism lead to less scientific production? I'm obsessed with building infrastructure and maintaining a tech lead, strategy be damned.

Yes, but indirectly. Because Democracy and Republic get the commerce bonus (any tile that produces at least 1 commerce gets an extra 1), research is better in those governments. However, in Communism, *if* you have less corruption then in Republic/Democracy (hard to get), then science could be almost equal as you gain lost gold to corruption.

Or you can just :hammer: them and take their cities to use for science.

Cheers. So the trick is to gauge the point at which Communism becomes more cost-effective. The other thing to consider is whether you're willing to sacrifice population throuh pop-rushing. (I read on this site that you can produce new workers when the cities reach theier maximum and have them running around until you need to pop-rush, in which case you replace the lost population immediately). I would guess, if you expand too far, then you need Communism, but I tend to concentrate on a core of metropoli on one continent.

I am on a tiny map on monarch and am pretty much dominating. The indians are the only ones left, and I dominate most of the map. I'm pretty sure I could stomp them into the ground, but I sometimes like to prolong things and drag out my victory. Basically, I am in a democratic government, but corruption is rampant. 455 of my 1106 income goes to corruption. I realize that I have WAY too many cities (41) for the map size. Would this be a good time to switch over to communism? One problem I have is the dark palace and palace are too close together. I attempted to get a great leader in multiple wars so that I could move the palace, but to no avail. I can't imagine that the corruption could be worse under communism, but I have a little bit of a gold reserve that I use to rush improvements, and the gold will basically be useless under communism. I guess I really don't have a complete understanding of when to switch govs.

I've attached a copy of my latest save file if anyone wants to take a gander. It's the original civ3 version 1.29. And if anyone does look at this save, please keep in mind I'm a bit of a noob. I have a few useless improvements and what not, but overall I think I'm doing alright.

In Vanilla Civ3 and PTW, Communism is rarely worth switching to, unless you are a serious warmonger. It balances out corruption across your entire CIv, which means that you far-flung, corrupt cities can actually build something, but your powerhouse *core(s)* areound your Palace(s) get the same level of corruption as your worst cities, so you can barely build anything there, either!

In Conquests, Communism was "improved", and the working of the Forbidden Palace was "fixed" (read: made to work the way it was intended, rather than coded, in the earlier releases). This makes Communism a very good government to use with large empires in C3C.

thanks guys for culture flips, now i know why Babylyons attacked me =D.
Their city flipped to my side and it had thei only source of uranium.
they didnt like it.
Anyway Communism is the best: just look at my save and laugh.
