Back in the days of Civ II, you'd sell off your universities and libraries and survive off the proceeds while switching up your tax rate to 100% luxuries and getting all cities to maximum happiness for a high score. Those days are long gone!
As @Uberfrog says, in Civ6 you can't removes districts and you also can't sell off buildings. And sadly you can't even convert do a project that will earn gold as you can with some other districts. (That would be a nice change/mod if you could.) Yet you must still sink up to 6 gold per turn for building maintenance.
You're nearly home. In a few more turns it won't be a problem anymore.
You may still want those universities around for their great scientist points anyway. If you are aiming for a science victory, Sagan and Kwolek will aid your space projects a lot.
I think that in this stage of the game the small maintenance cost of the buildings won't be important. As somebody said, you are at least still earning great scientists, if there are any left And future techs increase your score (which sadly quite doesn't matter in Civ6 as there is no hall of fame).
The ability to completely destroy the district would be nice if you need that tile for something else, but again - does it really matter in this stage of the game?

For micro purposes, you'd:
1. Only turn the luxury slider up to the point in which every city was in a We Love The ___ Day ; which was much less than 100% since some of the citizens could be Elvis impersonators. 50% would have been plenty.
2. Keep the science buildings ; future tech was also worth a few victory points every time you discovered.
