So today was the first time I ever got into a deficit (-gold per turn) and had 0 gold. This was an MP game where the final struggle was shifting in my favor.

In any case, so there it was -70 gold or so, and my science drops by equal amount and I still have over 100 science per turn. However, I lost some units due to inability to support maintenance.

I am a bit confused here. Some people spoke of the internal slider system that adjusts it automatically, well it did adjust but I still lost units.

What am I missing here

Without a clear view of your situation, here's what I think happened:

1. Too many units. Remember that all of your units cost gold to maintain now, even workers. You're probably a civ with a military dent, and all that military might is costing you.

2. Too many unnecessary buildings. Most buildings cost gold to maintain. That 3 gpt building you built for happiness is costing you a lot. Consider using trade posts in lieu of farms. Your food comes from maritime CS's.

3. Trade routes. Remember to keep trade routes for the extra gold. Also, roads do not necessarily be connected to your capital. In the lated parts of expansion, as long as your new cities are connected to cities connected to your capital, you're good.

These are some of the things that come to mind immediately. I'm sure there are more things that can cause a gold deficit. Try popping a Great Person for a GA and see if that can get you out of your gold deficit. If it doesn't, well, you did something seriously wrong.

I think what the OP is saying is that he (like others) had thought that the gold deficit would first come out of science, and so that -70 gold would reduce his science to 30, and he'd have to have -101 gold before he started losing units.

I have had 160 science or so, the moment I hit 0 gold the science was reduced by amount of deficit per turn, but I still maintained that same deficit even with the science hit, and I started loosing units.

Ok, so maybe this means that gold deficit affects science, but not the other way around (improving gold gain through science)?
